Total Time = 1h 40m 49s
Overall Rank = 47/109
Age Group = F40-44
Age Group Rank = 2/5
Pre-race routine:

Had a light breakfast of yogurt and a banana. Cup of coffee. Packed all the night before, just had to get it all in the car.
Event warmup:

Not enough. I need to make sure I warm up well before swim. Wasn't really anywhere to get some warmup laps in, which I really need. Felt good about my transition set up, all was ready to go.
Swim
  • 17m 44s
  • 700 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

Poor swim. 50m pool, which I have only swam in once. Not sure why it is different, but it definitely is! Breast stroked most. Difficulty with pacing. I can't say I panic exactly, but I am just not comfortable with freestyle and breathing. I think I maybe give up too easy.
What would you do differently?:

Need to push myself harder to keep at it, but relax at the same time. I tried to talk to myself as I was swimming, remembering all I have learned, but have to keep working at it.
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Had socks powdered, shoes ready to go. Threw jacket on, helmet on, and go. No issues. T1 time indicated was just for run from swim exit to transition
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 53m 2s
  • 20 kms
  • 22.63 km/hr
Comments:

Felt pretty good on the bike. Weaved a bit more than I would like, need to work on that.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, really, just need to keep working.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Racked bike, helmet off, bike shoes off, running shoes on, go.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 28m 58s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 47s  min/km
Comments:

Went out really fast, despite not feeling that way! Under 5min/km. Recognized and walked about 30 secs to reset pace. Then was good.
What would you do differently?:

Could have pushed harder at this distance.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit and stretched. Had a few snacks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience.

Way to go, Kirsten!  Just curious - what is the powder in the socks trick?

Hi Dave,

Thanks.  I just put some baby powder in my socks and then rolled the tops down to make them easier to get on to wet feet!  Worked great!

Thanks!  Was pretty tickled with that, in spite of the fact there were only 5 of us Wink.

Kirsten, you may not call yourself an ironman (yet), but you can  certainly call yourself a triathlete. Congrats for your achievement and looking forward to reading more race reports from you!
