Subject: double and triple ironman...crazyness?

from http://oarevents.com/readnews.asp?id=151&catID=2

an excerpt:

"Competitors in Odyssey’s Double Iron Triathlon, which started on Saturday the 11th and continued on to Sunday the 12th, faced the daunting task of swimming 4.8 miles or paddling 16 miles; biking 224 miles; and running 52.4 miles. The course record at Lake Anna for the Double is 24 hours 5 minutes. The Triple triathletes started a day earlier to complete an amazing 7.2-mile lake swim; a grueling 336-mile bike ride; and an astonishing 78.6-mile run. The course record at Lake Anna for the Triple is 45 hours 40 minutes set by 3 time Triple champion New Yorker Chris Bergland. Odyssey’s Triple IRON is the longest triathlon in North America, and the Double IRON is one of only two ultra-distance triathlons of it’s kind in North America. "

would these competitors be regarded as 'the true athlete'?  but there is also a point where SOOO much training will actually be detrimental to your health...r these people at that point?  i think i have read somewhere (don't quote me though) that your true health GAINS come from couch potato to a sprint or olympic...anything after that AND the continued benefits are only marginally improved with/respect the sprint/olympic.  have u all read anything like this?

i always SAY i will stop at a (single) iron-distance race...but u know what?  your always gonna want more...and that has to do with most things in life...at least for myself.

  happy training this week.

Ron I have heard and read the same things about improving one's fitness vs actually declining in fitness because of the pounding a body takes. For instance I heard during the Chicago marathon there were experts talking about how after completing a marathon you can lose as much as a quarter inch in height. Doing a double or triple IronMan can not be good for you health wise.....now the ego is something else.

there's a race in leadville colorado called the leadville 100. It's either a 100 mile mountain bike race or a 100 mile trail run. A lot of this is on fire roads, but it's all above 7000 feet, and the max altitude is above 12,000. A few crazy souls do both races back to back. My life science teacher from seventh grade did both of them a few years ago. He got awards for doing the bike in under 12 hours and for doing the run in under 24. Overall time was something like 34:30:00. He was on crutches for two weeks afterwards.

To train for this sucker, he would start running after he'd finished school with a backpack full of food and water. His girlfriend would go to sleep, wake up early in the morning, and just drive around til she found him.

I consider this man highly unstable.

Where in the world do these people find the time to train for such extreme distances?? And I thought I was crazy training for a spring tri ontop of all of my work obligations and crazy schedule! It just sounds painful thinking of those distances, but imagine the high at the end, or can you really enjoy the high because of extreme exhaustion?!

There is a local Century race (run over 3 days) they have here and few people finish. I can't imagine even trying for it :-)

After I read the article, including the place where it mentions one of the men completing a 10xIronman I was a little excited, like it is something that I would want to do. About the training....I think as you keep increasing the distance your training time only increases marginally. For example, if I recall, in the Triathlon Training Bible (Friel) I think the time required to complete for a sprint triathlon is roughly half that of a full ironman. I doubt if more than a full ironman distance would require much more training, but rather, maybe different training. When I was training for the mile in track we would run up to 4x-6x the distance (including warmups) on long workout days. When I was training for cross country in hs, we would run up to 2X the race distance on long slow days. When training for marathon, nobody suggests running over 20 miles to prepare for a 26 mile race. I am guessing that most ironmen competitors rarely workout more than their race time in a single workout.

Just my thoughts........boy that 10x Ironman still seems like a big challenge.....hrmm.....maybe in another 10 years.

Hi all!
I've just been reading about these extra long races........... I think I'm digging Lara's point about balance! Ironically, training for triathlon helps people understand the importance of balance in their lives........ I know it has for mine! I guess there will always be those that need to take it to the extreme, and hey who says I won't be one of those people 10 years from now!!! Yikes, scarry thoughts... I haven't even done my first olympic distance yet...... I think that will be long enough for me, maybe for a lifetime... who knows. Take care everyone,
