Sorry man. Road rash sucks, plain and simple. I hope you're able to sleep ok and heal soon.

Brad

Thanks. Scotch wore off, looks like I'm going to be up every hour or so.

Tegaderm up the shallow abrasions, it'll get all oozy underneath then heal up to fresh pink skin in a week.  Put the tegaderm on and forget about it unless it starts to ooze out the sides.

The elbow one looks deeper.  Are you missing a chunk of skin?  If that is the case, get some silvadine cream (I always needed a prescription and all of my road rash has happened near Philly so far).  Cover that bad boy with the cream everyday, put an emolsive bandage over that and wrap it.  Change it once or twice a day until it fills in.  It will take a while.  When you go cycling, protect it from moisture with petroleum jelly.  It'll be messy for a good bit and will hurt like hell whenever you move it or the skin around it.  Welcome to the club!

New thread title: "I HTFU'd Today."

Glad to see the two of you are ok.

Definite agreement on the HTFU. Wow, that looks bad and you did 4.5 more hours!?! Wow. I'm glad to hear you are OK.

Peroxide, polysporin, and tegaderm. I work at a medical school so no shortage of advice. Usually from the nurses, the physicians are usually like 'That's not so bad, go wash it off."

Rub some dirt on it and get back out there. That worked when I was 6.

This is actually went through my head as the accident happened. I think this is fairly typical.

1. My bike!!!!

2. Oh s*** this is gonna be bad.

3. Splat!

4. I hope my arm isn't broken, I just paid for two races next month.

5. Damn, now I have to catch up to the group.

And even though I know he's not on here, kudos to the ride leader from the Bike Club of Philly. You are a good guy, got me and my bike out of the road and checked out quickly, and it was a great ride.

Hmm, I think I need a bigger piece of Tegaderm. No wonder I had trouble sleeping on my side

Nothing broken, so you gotta laugh.

Funny how these things happen in slow motion, I can see myself flying through the air and rolling in the street.

Isn't that surreal? Same thing happened to me when I went off a cliff on my roadie. Everything was in slow motion until impact. Wow. I thought I was the only one.

VO2Matt - 2012-03-18 8:39 PM was there any damage to the carbon?  You might have it looked at anyway.  You can damage CF without it looking bad only to have it suddenly fail without warning days/weeks/months later.

This type of damage would be visible. If he had an impact event that would be one thing.  This was a slide out - the frame would show the abrasions at any impact point.

I would definitely get it checked out.  I crashed a few years ago and the bike looked fine to me - just a little scratch on the bars.  Took it in and had to replace them.  You don't want to take chances with carbon.

Welcome to the club.

You sure they aren't the Village People? We pulled up behind a group of actual bikers on Harleys towards the end of the ride, both groups had a laugh.

I try and say bikers because cyclists sounds somewhat snobby.

I will, but I did give the bike a thorough going over today. I have to take my tri bike in for a fitting before the April race, so I'll have them go over the road bike while I''m there. I haven't seen it, but I bet when carbon fails it fails spectacularly. Like Pyrex.

I went down on the non-drive side. Skewer is shaved down as is my seat. Saddle bag has a broken zipper. Then when the bike flipped the brake handles got scratched. The frame itself doesn't have a single mark. I think I did a relatively good job protecting the bike, right until the point I came unclipped and we both did a flip turn

Ugh...so sorry to hear Brian.  Glad you and your ride are ok.

I had the same exact thing happen to me two years ago.  Too fast on a corner, hit gravel and the ride just flew out from under me.  Tore up my shorts and i have some scarring on thigh and arm from the wreck.  I raced the next week!

What ride did you join up with?  I was looking at some of the Bike Club of Philly rides now that the weather is so nice.  Would like to join up for a ride soon.

I had my first spectacular crash today, slid out in a corner, probably a combo of going a little too fast and some sand on the road. I recognized the point of "yep, I'm going down!" as the slow-motion part, and everything after that as a blur. Forearm and knee scraped up, bar tape got ripped, but that's about it. On the way back, I thought, "I could have finished my loop!" But when I got home my husband was shocked I didn't call to have him pick me up and rode back in that condition! My biggest concern getting home was checking my bike over. I'm thankful for the large bandaids I packed in my seat bag.
