Subject: yoga question

reading a post elsewhere, the person recomended Power Yoga : The Total Strength and Flexibility Workout by Beryl Bender Birch...upon reading amazon reviews, it seems that the book Ashtanga Yoga: The Definitive Step-By-Step Guide to Dynamic Yoga by John Scott, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois would be more appropriate???  maybe also Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual: An Illustrated Guide to Personal Practice by David Swenson. I have never taken yoga...i read that classes r essential...i am busy though...once a week maybe?  twice a month?  what r good rates?  how long r the classes?

why am i thinking about yoga?  well, i tend to get stressed easily with those focused headaches in the back of my head off to the side PLUS something that will keep me flexible.  I here this ashtanga yoga helps reduce injury.  sure i stretch before and after workouts BUT would this serve me better to reduce stress and relax PLUS gain flexibility??

any recommendations would be very helpful...total newb at this.

Hi Ron,

I can't personally answer your question from experience but a couple of days ago I read this on another site. It may help clarify which type of yoga you feel best suits your needs:

You might check out the local Y for classes. Another suggestion would be to see if there in a
natural healing place or alternative health center in your area. They could also give you more information. Once you have the correct form down, you can practice on your own. When the weather here was nicer my landlord would be practicing out in the garden very early in the morning. Good luck.

I have seen Pilates advertised in my gym where I work out and I have heard it in passing conversations. Can you tell me more about what this is and why it might be something I might want to look into. I saw you mention and I have heard about 'core' body strength. Again is this new or have I missed something along the way?

i checked the tno link out...must have missed that article...great intro...the 'beekrams' sound intersting too...i also found the qoute that mentioned the authour's secret for racing a lot and winning lots of races to be very interseting...i am going to keep following up...

and lara...great info... and i like the price...gonna look for places around me...my gym offers yoga too...maybe that is worth a try...although not sure which kind.  i would like to get to a level where i don't have to train with the masses...maybe dim the living room, candles, scents, some trance music...wife walks in..."what the hell are u doing!!!???''

I know a pro tiathlete and he swears by yoga and does it 5 days a week. That is easier for him to do since he is being paid to do what the rest of us search for time to do. He feels one of the most important things to do in training is to work the "core". My wife does yoga about once a week and just loves it.

Lara, thanks for the descriptions and I did find an article on core strength on another site.

Looks like I want to start working my core this off season.
