So I was thinking...

Would it be illegal to take water with you during a tri in the swim portion of the race?  If you could come up with a way to carry it without creating drag. IE camelback inside the wetsuit or something like that.

Would this be illegal? because especially in the ocean, fresh water floats and would create buoyancy.

I have very little useful to add, except BEST POST TITLE EVER - water during swim - I hope so... Tough to swim on the bike course.

Seriously though, even if the camelback was inside the wetsuit, the wetsuit would have to be loser, creating drag. Particularly as you emptied drag. Could it also be mistaken for some sort of buoyancy aid, even though it isn't, like stuffing a float in your wetsuit!

Frankly, I can barely fit me inside my wetsuit, never mind anything else!!

I'm not sure if it is legal but why would you need water on the swim?  Seems to me like any hydration benefits you may get are going to be outweighed by the inefficiency of carrying the extra pack and the energy wasted trying to drink it.

Probably illegal. Anything that holds water can hold air. Added buoyancy is illegal.

Also, just not a great idea for many, many reason.

I just don't follow why you would want to do this.  Why do you need to drink water during the swim?

I don't think it's a crazy question. I mean I drink during Masters Swim practice.

But unless you are doing a 10K swim or longer and have someone giving you water. You won't need water during even an Ironman distance swim.

Well, some people "need" water during a 5K.

I have seen camelbacks and hydration belts in 5k's........not sure why, but there they were

One can dehydrate during the swim as well as the bike and run.    We sweat when we swim, we just don't notice it as it is washed away as we swim.

A juice pack in the wetsuit won't effect buoyancy or streamlining.   For an ironman swim, especially in salt water, dehydration is something to think about.  If you are swimming hard for an hour or two, how  is that physiologically different from any land based exercise?   Hydration is critical to all forms of work outs.

You might be able to get away with a Camelbak hydration jersey:

I'm with the others wondering if it's really needed for the swim.

I've pondered hydration for an Iron distance swim...not so much that I'd need it during the swim, but wouldn't it be nice to start the rest of your long day that much more ahead of the dehydration curve?  Can work without it? sure...but if drinking were convenient and didn't cause me to puke on the swim, that'd be cool.

I end up drinking half the ocean/lake/pool during the swim... are you not supposed to do that?

I've never seen a water/food station in a swim under 10k.  There isn't in the 5k swim I do, nor in a mid-length race like the Chesapeake Bay swim (4.4 miles).  At 10k you see them.  Must be a reason for that, but I've not given it much thought.

I thought the swim was where you discharge liquid. Or was that the bike?

Even in warm salt water and using a full IM swim time (2:20 for Cozumel), you will not dehydrate on the swim if you are properly hydrated before the race.

well if you are swimming 2.4 miles in the ocean you might get thirsty.  Just thinking out loud here.
