Subject: Trainer skewer vs road skewer?

The other day when I went for my first outside ride of the season, I forgot to switch from the trainer skewer to my road skewer.  Which brings me to my question:

Why do I have two skewers?  My trainer came with a skewer and a the guide said to use it, so I did.  I guessed it's harder than my road skewer so I didn't crush something with the trainer clampy-mechanism... Why should I bother putting my road skewer back in?  (For the record, I did...I just don't know why.)

I have but no choice to use my training skewer on the trainer.  The one that goes with my bike will not fit in the trainer.  That's mainly what is about, fit.

I dont really have a "Trainer Skewer" but I do have a couple old ones from the back of the garage that will fit in the trainer.  The new ones dont seem to fit.  So I use the old on on the trainer and the new one on the road.  As to why I don't just use the old one for both?  Well the old one is silver and the new one is black.  I can't go riding around with the wrong color skewer!  That and the new one is a little lighter than the old one.  Clearly that will make me faster!!

Don't know that one really has to put the road skewer back on for riding outside, but do use the trainer skewer on the trainer. It's built a bit beefier to handle the stress applied by the trainer clamping mechanism.

To preserve the aesthetic of the racing machine.

The trainer skewer is a bit heavier.....so if you are a weight weenie then this is a concern.

I generally leave the trainer skewer in until the "ify" spring season is over and then switch when I know 100% of my rides will be outside.

A trainer skewer will be made with steel nuts/levers to resist the wear from the motion of indoor riding. A road skewer will be designed to be strong, yet light, so usually aluminum or plastics/composite nuts/lever. Using a road skewer on the trainer usually destroys the skewer in short order and will cause the bike to rock. Using the trainer skewer on the road works fine, but tend to lead to rust/oxidation of the skewer, simply not design to be oxidation resistant.

The skewer that comes with the trainer is what used to come in road bikes years ago. New skewers are now lighter. Nothing wrong with using your trainer skewer unless you want to cut down weight.

I keep my trainer skewer in until I know I will not be using my trainer b/c I'm outdoors for all my rides and then put my lighter one in

Your road skewer may not fit in your trainer. You don't HAVE to have an actual "trainer" skewer--just one that fits in the cups. We've got a box full of skewers at home, and whenever I put a bike on the trainer, I just find one that fits.

FWIW, I never take it off. My tri bike always has one on the rear wheel.

Yep, trainer skewers are more sturdy and fit the trainer.  I just leave it on and like others have posted here, I'll put my road skewers on when all my rides will be outdoors. =)

I just leave the trainer skewer on if I know I'm going to be switching back and forth from road to trainer.  But for a race...my Zipp Ti skewers are for sure going on.

I use a Shimano XT skewer from my mountain bike.  Sturdy enough for the trainer, less dork looking if I forget to change it before a race.  It is heavier than my aero skewer, but it locks into the trainer and doubt it would break.

In my case, the trainer skewer is the only one that will hold securely in my trainer (an older CycleOps Fluid). There's no way I'm going to leave that in for races though, it's going to slow me down. I lost well over 3 seconds on a century ride the one time I left it in, and could totally feel it on hills.
