Subject: Compression: socks vs sleeves
I was diagnosed with a calf strain at Physical Therapy yesterday (its right along the posterior tibial tendon area.)  My PT said I could try an easy run maybe this weekend, just depending on how it feels.  It's pretty sore today, so I am probably going to rest it until Fri/Sat and then ride, and maaaybe run Sunday.  He said I should wear a sleeve (he recommended biosilk) but didn't need the "whole sock."  So my questions are: what are the difference between sock/sleeve (besides the obvious) do people usually run in sleeves and socks are for recovery?  I'm thinking I'd love the swaggle deal on socks, because I cannot find sleeves for a comparable price, but if there is a difference, really, I'd rather get whats best.  Anyone have input?  If I should go sleeve, anyone have a favorite brand?  Should I just wear one, or throw in another (I can order one sleeve at a time....)  I have previously had shin splints/soft tissue issues on the other leg....

You will probably get all different types of answers but here is my take.  I went with the sleeves because I am picky about the socks I wear while running and biking.  If I was going to wear compression for recovery I would probably go with recovery tights.  I have zoot sleeves and like them but they are difficult to get on and off ...I think due to my size 14 feet.

Good luck

I believe most triathletes prefer the sleeves over the socks because you can wear them under a wetsuit or in the water w/o a wetsuit. Can't do that with full socks and if you're wearing them in a race then good luck getting socks on in transition!

I run and bike in CEP sleeves.  Although for recovery I like using compression socks that I bought at my local drug store.

what are the difference between sock/sleeve (besides the obvious)

do people usually run in sleeves and socks are for recovery?

Sleeves are less for recovery and more for use during an event. Since they do not cover your entire lower leg their ability to aid recovery is reduced.

Both are great at reducing muscle oscillation (movement) while running which may reduce fatigue.

I prefer sleeves for use during very long runs and I have a pair of CW-X full compression tights for wearing after.

Sleeves don't do as much to help with blood pooling in the feet as socks (for obvious reasons), but do help with recovery due to the muscle compression (great for shin splints BTW).  You can also wear sleeves more often w/o washing (I slept with a pair at night for several weeks to banish my shin splints).

Since you have a calf issue, it's more about the tissue compression than helping circulation, so sleeves should be fine.  It also means you can wear the socks of your choosing.

Try AmesWalker.com.  Mostly geriatric compression, but they have 20-30mmHg (recovery level) coolmax socks for ~$15 and there's almost always a free shipping coupon.  I cut the feet off a pair for night recovery and they've held up fine.

Great price on the socks.  Have you every tried the leotard?  It is $45 which is much cheaper than "recovery tights".  I'm wondering if they would be equivalent.

Can someone let me know how the sizing works for compression sleeves?

Do you go by the diameter of your calves, or something??

too late to edit, just posting to say I found the answer: for anyone else wondering, yes, just measure your calf's circumference at its widest point.

Do the sleeves reach up to your hip? I have a recent quad strain and I'm trying to figure out a way to compress it when I run. Right now it swells up after I jog. So I'm resting a little more but the ortho said I needed compression pants. Has anyone used compression shorts? Or heard of them?

There are indeed many brands that carry compression shorts. Generally the same length/shape as a pair of triathlon cycling shorts, or a swimming jammer. But with graduated compression.
