So I'm in the market for bike shorts, a jersey, and a helmet. I am also in the market for either a tri suit or tri shorts and a top.

For one, how many of you train in an aero-helmet? Because I would prefer to spend 100 or less on a road helmet, but louis garneau has the chrono-leggera aero helmet for 130. This would be great for knocking out two birds with one stone, but what are your thoughts?

Also, do any of you use tri-shorts as your bike shorts and wear that with a jersey? It would be a lot cheaper for me, but I'm not really sure how good the chamois is on tri-shorts.

Lastly, what brands do you recommend for tri-apparel? Are there any other than louis garneau, orca, and 2XU? Those are the only ones that I know of.

I would never wear an aero helmet for everyday training. I love my aero helmet, but it's not nearly as comfortable as my regular helmet. Plus, when I'm on a training ride, I'm not aero 100% of the time-- another reason why a regular helmet makes more sense for everyday. Not to mention that it looks silly, if you care about that.

Nothing wrong with tri shorts and bike jersey.

My favorite brands for tri and cycling clothing are Craft and 2XU, but that's a very personal choice. Other brands may fit you better.

I wouldn't train in an aero helmet.

But tri shorts and bike jerseys work fine together

Generally just one that conforms nicely with your head.

See if you can find a Giro Prolite on sale at realcyclist or some other online retailer. I paid something like $75.99 for mine on Bonktown and I really like it.

Giro pro-light during one of the sales online.
I didn't own bike shorts until I was training for a double century, then I figured out I could have done all this with tri shorts just as easily and comfortably.

If you get compression shirts, you don't even need the bike jerseys, just wear the compression shirts riding and running.

On helmets...I would highly recommend trying a few brands on as they all fit a little differently depending on your head size/shape.  I used to wear Giro and it just never fit right.  Switched to a Bell and love them.

All helmets, from the $20 ones at Wal-mart to the $300 ones the guys in he Tour de France wear, conform to the same safety standard, so don't worry about paying for safety.
So, since you don't have to worry about protection, focus on fit and comfort, and aesthetics. Find one you like.
