Subject: Why do skinny people run so fast?

Not a serious question, just venting.

My weightlifting partner, who hasn't ran in three months says to me "Hey I haven't ran in a while so I'm going to join you this week." I thought that would be awesome to finally have a partner. It never occured to me that he was 40 lbs lighter than me and that he is probably fast. So we're getting ready to head out and he tells me to take it slow for him since it's been so long, then he proceeds to take off and leave me in the dust. WTF this guy hasn't ran in three months. I am by no means a fast guy but come on.

So I finish well behind him and when I finally arrive he says "You know for a guy who runs all the time I thought that you would be a lot faster." Thanks a lot buddy.

Ok, I feel better. Back to work.

Boy ... I am right there with you on that one. Once a year our company sponsors a local race. So, everyone gets all excited - especially the people who never train. And what happens to me - I train 5-6 times a week. Well, I get blown away by my colleagues who never run except for the few weeks preceding the race. They'll go out and run a 23 minute 5K and not suffer and I will suffer EVERY SINGLE MINUTE of my 26 minutes.

Yup. Only way to keep up is to get skinnier.

I am in the middle of an experiment right now. We have a 5k trail run tonight. I ran the course this morning wearing a 29 pound weight vest. I can't wait to see how much better my time is tonight. Why 29? That's what I lost since January. I took 44:44 off my half-marathon time in that time. Weight loss is a huge factor.

I notice differences in my run times when I have a weight loss/gain of about fifteen pounds. It seems to be about 20-30 sec./mile difference. I've added about ten pounds or so in the last few months and my times have suffered. Hopefully I'll have time this summer to really get on the training and get it under control.

I've never trained with a weight vest but I've done a lot of hiking with heavy packs and I've noticed that I get faster after doing that for a while. Good luck on the run tonight.

I read the book "Racing Weight", don't remember the specific statistics but he talks about how just a few pounds can make a difference in speed and energy required to go the same speed.  Really interesting stuff I thought.  I like cookies and ice cream too much to worry about getting a little bit faster though.

Just keep running. 3 months is not a long lay off to go out a run a decent pace depending on your distance.

I have been told that you will drop 2-3 sec per mile per lb.  Makes a huge difference...

Of course another theory is that they're trying to run away from the fat guy in the back because they're afraid I will try to eat them.

my n=1 experiment.  7-8 months ago I weighed 30 pounds more.  My "easy" pace runs were in the 9:40 range.  Today I am about 205, "easy" pace runs at same RPE are in the 9:10s.

in cycling maybe on the uphills, but I seem to blow everyone away on the downhills.  Extra weight and great wheels make a big difference.
