Subject: Crossing the KS River on bike in KCK

I'm training for a few triathlons this summer and am very new to the sport.  I am thinking of biking to and from work this summer as part of my workout/training on the bike.  I live in Shawnee and work just across the Kaw near 435.  On my drive to work, I get on 435 at Holliday Dr and get off on Woodend: literally about 1/2 mile on 435.  How would you make it? There does not seem to a reasonable alternative to 435 that I could use on my bike.  I could go around on the Turner Diaganol but riding on K-32 down in that area is not quite as traffic heavy but still very busy (lots of big trucks, etc) but would be much longer.

Any ideas or best practices?

What about going W on 47th to K-7 N, then East on 32? You could go South on 9th or 98th to get you to Woodend. I see bikes on 47th and K7 all of the time and K7 doesn't seem as busy as 435. Good luck!

K32 isnt terrible to ride on. I ride it pretty regularly and west of 435 it has decent wide shoulders most of the way. They're a little trashy but so far I haven't had any flats yet. People for the most part keep an eye out for cyclists on that stretch, I pass people on almost every ride on that highway. It's also pretty flat which is a bonus.  lol I would think the K7 route would be the way to go, going down through Turner gets into some narrower roads. I'll ride down that way this week and let you know.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  I don't mind going down through Turner but am not excited about riding K-32 West from 55th Street all the way to 435...that seems more dangerous than a short stretch on 435.

K7 may be the route to go.  That would be right at an 18 mile ride to work.  I have never ridden K-7 before and am not sure what traffic would be like at 6:45am.  I've been on K-32 a few times and West of 435 doesn't seem bad at all.  I'm trying to figure out how to get some bike training in during the week and unfortunately my workout times are constricted to early mornings.  If I could ride too and from work it would help!
