Subject: Ok..who's done a 70.3 IRONMAN?

So I haven't don't a half Ironman and plan on registering for the Oceanside one next year. I was just reading the rules and regulations for this years....NO MUSIC????? How can anyone run without music?

Is this just for the Ironman or are regular triathlons like this too? I have my first try in June and I run a lot of half marathons but I've never ran without music.

All the local tri's regardless of distance that I have been to do NOT allow headphones/music.

It is a safety issue.

All ironman events do not allow it either.

USAT rules say no music/headphones/communication devices.

I never run with music. I just get inside my own head and stay there. Sometimes it scares me.....

I can. Easy. I'm deaf.

No music is necessary to survive SBR.

I think every single triathlon forbids music anyways. Train without it, and you'll be fine, trust me. If I can do it, you can.

There are a few races (especially beginner friendly ones, i.e. sprint distance) that do allow music.  But most don't, and as others have said USAT races definitely don't.

Ahh, I didn't know that. All the triathlons that I've done don't. My bad, but still...

I MUST do a half ironman b/c I'm a brand name type of girl , plus I want to do it, just to say I have done it. I might try a full ironman at some point in my life.

I am signed up for the San Diego Tri Sept 8th, but not the 70.3.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I guess I'll have to sing out loud while I run. LOL

No music for me, either.  Tried it a couple of times....nope, just like being with my own thoughts and surroundings.

As long as they aren't trying to be a USAT sanctioned race, they can do what they want in a race... but I'm pretty certain that to get that sanction, they will not allow personal audio devices at all.

As for SuperFrog... I'd love to make it out there to Coronado some day for that.

You might find running without music is better anyway, less "stuff" to fuss with, more sense of connectedness to the surroundings, increased awareness

I train with music all the time but in a race all the other stuff(aid station, nutrition, other people and the course) going on I don't even think about music. On the bike they want you to hear if someone says on your left or other bikes and cars coming near you ( safety first)

Pacific Crest Long Distance Tri (70.3) in June, which I'm hoping to do as my first HIM, specifically states that you are allowed to do the run only with music, as long as you have only one earbud in. No music is allowed on the bike, or, obviously, the swim. The run is on a bike path which, presumably, will be closed to non-race traffic. It's not IM branded, but it is a standard 70.3. No, I didn't choose the event because of this; I doubt I will run with music as I think the extra earphone/wire would be too distracting, but it's an option. Might put my MP3 player in T2 and take it if I'm feeling truly awful by that point.

the super frog is same distance but tougher (beach start), and you race against navy seals. To me if you for 70.3 you are a half iron man 140.6 iron man, but if you race the "Ironman" race brand then you are a ford motor company ironman.

Typically there is a time penalty for the first two violations and a DNF for the 3rd.  Any one, or all 3, of those could be headphones.

And they are not hard to see.

Actually, you'd be a "rhoto company ironman" at Oceanside.

I have done a nonbranded 70.3. And I like running with music but most if not all tris don't permit it. I would love for them to change the rule but for the time being no music for me or you.

I've done 1 (August 70.3 last year) and doing 2 more this year, the Eagleman 70.3 and the inaugural National Harbor 70.3.  Didn't want to do more than 1 this year, but couldn't pass up on participating in an inaugural half Ironman.  Not for nothing, don't feel bad about name brand.  I had opportunities to do non-IM brand halfs, but I wanted my first 70.3 distance to be an official Ironman WTC event.  And I was GLAD for it.  Very well organized, awesome events and expo.  You'll really like the fact that your first big event is an actual big event.  WTC definitely knows how to put on a race.

That being said, correct with what everyone else has said, no music.  That's a USAT rule.

I've never done a race that allowed music.  I always train with music, so the only times I never train with music is either swimming or in a race.  On the sprint and Olympic distances, it doesn't bother me.  On the half distance, it only got to me later in the bike and on the run.  It's during that time when you have don't have the music to tune out your thoughts that your mental toughness becomes crucial.  That's when the mind games really take hold and you dig deep inside yourself to find out what you're made of.  And it winds up that your ability to overcome the mental part (as well as obviously the physical) that makes the whole experience so well worth it once you cross the finish line.

I ALWAYS train with music - run only.  But I've never used my iPod in a race.  I have taken it for marathons but with all the other stuff and people, there is plenty to see.

You won't miss it.
