Subject: Doing another race after your first IM

I'll be doing my first IM this November.  There's a 1/2 marathon a month after the IM.  I've run this 1/2 mary for the past 3 years- it's my annual race.  I hate to miss running it this year.  I'd like to say that I will run it, but am not sure if I'll be both mentally and physically to run it- even if it's just for fun.  I'd like to fully rest and recover from the IM so that I'll be ready to start marathon training in February.

So I'm curious- how long did it take you after your first IM to do another race?  I know that it varies from person to person, but I'm interested to hear everyone's respsonses.

Go ahead and register, and if you feel like you've recovered enough and have the enthusiasm to do it, run. If not, don't.

I'm planning on Goofy's Challenge 7 weeks after IMFL.

There's no reason not to do it. Take it easy after FL, do light workouts and just finish the 1/2 with no time goal.

I am in the minority of course but IMO the IM and 1/2 are kind of close if you want to race both. if it is more for fun, follow Jim's advice which is pretty good...

i'm signed up for a marathon 2 weeks after my IM this year. it's probably not the wisest thing to do but running is my forte - and i can always cancel.

I fully plan on doing St. A's two weeks after IMAZ.  You think you're nuts?  I'm gonna do MCM, then a HIM two weeks later, and then a 50 mile ultra 3 weeks after that.  So don't worry, you're not crazy.

First Ultra will be a 50K (if you can call it an ultra) called Dances With Dirt on September 9th in Michigan.  But the 50 miler will be Sunmart.  December 3. It's in Texas, though right now I can't think of where.  It's online somewhere I'm sure!

Awesome!  Definitely looking forward to reading that race report.  I've only done 2 marathons and 4 half marys, so I'm hoping it's not to premature to do a 50K.  If I can get thru that and then be ok to keep racing, I think the 50 miler will be doable.  Good luck on your 50K!!

I'm a bit concerned, my first full marathon is scheduled for about 3 weeks after my first HIM. I'm not anticipating being blisteringly fast in either, both are more of a "ok, let's do this!" thing. The marathon is really important to me. I recovered really quickly after my half marathon, haven't had any injuries yet (touch wood). I'm thinking the HIM half run will be my last long run before the mary, and I'll just take it super easy after that. HIM is on Sept. 24, and Columbus Mary is Oct. 15 (man, this is the one time I am PRAISING Ohio's flatness).

I've not decided if the HIM is my "A" race this year...it is the one I'm looking forward to the most, but realistically, it ain't going to be easy, or fast. I'm estimating 6.5 hrs, if all goes according to plan and based on my averages from last year on the 1/4 IM course at this same race. If this isn't my "A", it is a B+. I might be shooting for Pittsburgh as my A, just because of the hometown crowd, coworkers volunteering, and my family having no excuse to not be there!

I'm doing the Marine Corps Marathon a little over a month after IMWI. I was going to run Columbus, which is even sooner, but my brother called and said he was doing MCM, and if I wanted to register too. It'll be fun running with my brother.... Now if the weather can only hold out like last year's MCM.

Hopefully, I'm OK for the marathon, but as others have mentioned, I'm not out for an A Race, just a good run with my brother.
