I'm a new swimmer, and in the 3 months I've been training, I've built up to doing a non-stop mile (in the pool) at a pace of 2:01/100yds (done this my second time; my first was about 2:13/100yds).  I recently bought the Total Immersion book, and was going to start that training after my first tri, which was yesterday, but I'm wondering if I should get this book instead.

I plan on working on flip turns so I can swim continuously without stopping ever 25yds and turning around like I've done in the past, and then was going to work on form/speed.  Should I get this book, or do the TI instead?  I'm leaving this in the hands of the almighty BT, help me pick!!!

Why not do both? Knowledge is power.

There's no reason you can't be paying attention to your balance in the water AND be working on your catch & pull.

Get the book!  I had been swimming for years, then hadn't and used TI to regain my balance and form. That being said, Sheila's book has taught me how to maximize my high elbow underwater pull, and now I am literally using less strokes and getting faster.  The book focuses mainly on the power of the underwater stroke.  She also gives some great drills on "dry land" to help with arm positioning that are great.  I would highly recommend it!

This.

If you can apply TI principles to optimize your balance & reduce drag, that is going to make any improvement in your pull even more effective.

That is what I've been trying to do during my last couple of workouts:  working on my elbow position & catch while swimming "in the tube".

There's no one magic solution out there.

Rowdy Gaines?
Okay, so he can totally school me. I think it's just the angle or the fact that it loops in a not complete stroke. I don't know why it sucks me in, but it totally does. Maybe I just want to see him go somewhere :-). I guess I better buy the book now.

Have had this book for about 10 days now. During tonight's swim my average time for 100 yards is down by over 17 seconds over previous average. Part of this is due to taking a crazy bend out of my neck but I also really feel the pull now.

Won't say what my times are now cause they are still embarrassing.

ordered this and Chrissie's book too - and probably 5 other tri/ironman related literature, can't get enough.

I figure with this book and Coach John Van Wisse on my side, I should get faster right!?
