How much extra time would you add on to your estimated swim time for sea swim if you had only ever swam that distance in the pool???

First off...it is hard to say when you don't provide a specific distance.

Second - it is hard to say b/c of all the different variables (current, tides, wind, sea chop, etc) that you don't have in a pool.  A 4kt current in one direction can chop your times by a ton...while in another direction it can cause you to swim backwards.

Just swim it and don't worry about it.  Everyone else will be dealing with the same conditions so there is not advantage.

It's a 2000m swim! I am asking for my training partner who doesnt feel it will affect his time. He has never swum in the sea.

No walls and potentially a wetsuit will make it faster. Tides, current, and wind can go either way depending upon their direction. Hope for the best and train for the worst.

Surprised You might want to make a wager against him. He's NEVER swam in the sea and he is sure it wont have an affect on his time. That is possible, but highly unlikely.

To go from a pool with walls to pristine ocean swim (no current, waves, etc), you're a bit slower.  How much depends on how good you are at turns in a pool.  Wetsuits will make up some of the speed you lose.

I'm probably 4-5seconds per 100 slower in an open water swim.  We are too warm for wetsuits.

This questions comes up about 50 times a year.  The answer is "it doesn't matter."  There are too many variables in OW to try to arrive at any sort of meaningful figure.
