Subject: Pedal choice for first Tri with bragging rights on the line

My first Triathlon, 18.6 sprint, is in 14 days. I have platform pedals as well as Speedplays. I prefer the Speedplays but am wondering about the transitions. I can't run in my cycling shoes due to the mounts and I'm not confident enough to run barefoot out of T1 and do a slick Hi Ho Silver mount.

My goal is to finish and I'm really slow. But a friend of mine who races karts with me is also entering this event and it's his first also. We don't get to train together but our training times look like he and I are going to have a great race with each other. I'd really like to beat him so I'm stressing over every decision.

Would I be better off just using platforms and my running shoes?

Thanks!

What it will really come down to is your own training.

Are you seeing enoucg benefit from clipping in on your times to make up for the transition?
I'd practice transitions a bit, time how quickly you can make the changes ( and wear speedlaces on your runners )

See how much extra benefit you're getting from clipless pedals in between rides of the same effort.

Only then will you know for sure, for you, if it's economical.

On a personal note, I couldn't imagine doing a tri without my clipless pedals.
Do your testing and practice now, make an informed decision, and don't look back!

I'm a happy MOP finisher.  I've never used cycling shoes.  I've got platform pedals on my roadie with the strap-down cage.  T1 time is generally F/MOP. I usually pass peeps on the bike which is needed since my swim is so slow.  My T2 tends to be one of the fastest overall - rack bike, doff helmet, add running hat, and go run.

Cyclists tell me I'll bike even faster with cycling shoes, adding to my ability to pull, but it's hard to see that, given the short sprint course, it'd be enough to counter my fast T's.

My first (and only) tri I used the toe cages on platform pedals- i had trouble sliding into them, wasnt paying attention, and crashed into a spectator. Part of the problem was also loose running shoe laces. I've switched to the speed laces, and thats a no-brainer. I've tipped over with the clipless, but not into anyone else. I'm wondering with using the pull on the pedal would make the run any easier because you're using different muscles.

Use the Speedplays.

You have 14 days to either learn a hi ho silver mount (my wife and I learned it in one practice session and practice it all the time) or how to run in your bike shoes!

Have fun!

If you have a bike trainer, put your bike in it and practice the hi ho Silver.  You're going to lose pedaling power not using cycling shoes, and I would never change to not using shoes this close to the race.  You might save some time in transition but depending on how you are cycling with cycling shoes vs. without, you might lose that time in the bike leg, which is of course the longest part of the race and where you can probably gain the most time.  If you don't have a bike trainer, can you jerry-rig something?  or buy a bike trainer if it's in the budget?

Not for nothing, would you really be barefoot?  Would you at least put on socks?  Also practice getting out of the cycling shoes and jogging for a little bit to get used to the dismount.

Like most other posters are saying, have fun with the race.  That goes without saying.  But as for your buddy, kick his butt.  Competition is awesome.

Plus, it looks cool.

Use the speedplays. Frankly I'm shocked to see anyone here recommend the contrary.

Macca won Kona (2010) using Speedplays. Don't you want to be like Macca?. Smile

Use running shoes in the cages, so that if you lose you can say "I woulda beat you if..."
