First time training for an IM.  I'm on week 15 now and I'm noticing that i'm either eating or thinking about eating.  When I finish a meal, an hour later, i'm thinking about food again.  I always eat a big breakfast, I would say i'm eating around 3500 cal/per day.  I eat very balanced.  I lost about 5 lbs in the last 15 weeks which puts me around 180 and i'm 6 '2.

I guess my question is, do you all feel hungry all the time or is this my body telling me to eat more?

Nutrition is not my forte but I can tell you it is VERY important to eat after long workouts.  Recovery fuel!!  When I don't, it can throw me off for days.  So that being said, after a long workout, I always immediately drink a large chocolate milk and then get a full meal in within an hour.  I make myself do this, even though most of the time I am just not hungry after a long workout.

If you are loosing weight you are by definition burning more calories than you are consuming.  I think we all find our appetite increases in correlation with our increase in training.  At 180 lbs and nearing the peak of IM training I bet you are burning more than 3500 calories most days.  I weigh a bit more than you (195) and at baseline probably burn 2200-2500 calories in a day.  For me a 3 hour Z2-3 ride burns about 2,500 calories (based on HR and weight calculations) meaning for that day I use about 5,000 calories.  I may not eat that in the same day I use it, but I need to get it from somewhere or I will keep loosing weight.  I think I remember reading that Michael Phelps eats about 8,500 calories a day when he is in his peak training.

When I am in my peak training I am similar to you - always eating or planning my next food!  I just try to make sure I am making good choices with complex carbs, a quality low fat protein, and fresh fruit/veggies as much as possible.

One of my favorite things about increasing volume is increased appetite. I never count calories, I just try to eat as much as possible every single day!

I do pay attention to protein, though. I try to get AT LEAST 1/2 - 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight daily.
