Assuming half decent technique, about 100Cal/400m.

I less than quarter-assed it and found this http://www.nutribase.com/exercala.htm

Obviously these kinds of charts are only estimates.

I'm sure many of you are wondering about my energy expenditure per sport per hour, so I'll share:

Swim 676

Bike 752

Run 916

intense masters swim this morning and decided to bring my garmin 910

1 hour swim, 2800m total = 800 calories according to the watch

take with a grain of salt though, no heart rate monitor of course.

Like any sport, it completely depends on the effort. When I swim, the longest break I'll take is 15-30 seconds in between sets, so I'm swimming relatively continuously. Some people like to swim one length, take a break, then another length, and so on. For continuous swimming, and pretty hard sets, I'd say that calorie burn is probably quite similar to biking, but not as high as running.

Looking at these #'s would probably explian why my weight has crept up just a tad over the past month with  going to 3 swims a week and knocking out a run and a short bike from the schedule. Guess I was over estimating  calories a bit  at about 75 / 100M. Looks like its time to re configure some, seems like 40/100M would be more in line for me at this point.

Its tough to really gauge without a heart rate monitor.  But my Garm 405cx and my 500 both end up telling me (150lb, 5'7" guy) ~600 calories per hour at moderate intensity whether biking or running.  So I figure if I am in the pool for an hour doing a 2500-3000yd workout, its on that order (assuming no "breaks" between sets longer than 0:30-1:00).  I guess that works out to 100cal/400yds or so.

another aspect to take into consideration is that the rate of heat transfer between your skin and the water is much higher than skin to air.  your resting metabolism in water is much higher because of this since your body must produce a lot more energy to keep your core temperature up.  so while the activity of swimming may burn less calories than run/bike, you may actually be burning more from just being in the water.

Actually, heart rate is not a good guage for caloric expenditure. If you really want to know, you'll need some high end lab equipment but, for a ballpark, just go with the number I posted earlier, ~100Cal/400m.
