Pre-race routine:

Got all my stuff set up nice and early. Was first come first serve on racking the bike so I grabbed a primo spot!
Run
  • 09m 55s
  • 1.5 miles
  • 06m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Two loop course.
Run broke out real fast and I hung with them a little bit but didn't totally concern myself with the all out sprint that they were doing. I'm a big guy so it takes a lot for me to run with the lightweights and I wanted to save some for the bike where my strength is.

I stayed consistent in my position the entire 1.5 miles. One person passed me while I passed someone else so it was good. The 3/4 mile split was a little under 5 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe go slightly harder on the run.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition times were added to the bike as it as a manual race.

I went up one position in transition even though I fumbled with my helmet for what seemed like forever and it was probably only about 10 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn how to swing my leg over on the bike and ride out quicker rather than stopping and stepping over.
Bike
  • 22m 27s
  • 8 miles
  • 21.38 mile/hr
Comments:

Two loop course.

I was able to catch a few people on the bike. The first two I caught almost immediately. First was within 200 yards of transition and the next was about 1/4 mile in. I didn't see anyone for a long time after that...was just open road.

Picked off my last guy at about the 7 mile mark placing me 3rd but that would come back to bite me on the second run.

What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure why I didn't but I didn't stand to climb the hills at all on such a short course..I just spun through them. Not sure if that helped or hurt me.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I think this transition was very smooth, really wish I had the time for it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 10m 48s

Comments:

Two loop course.
I was feeling the bike on this. The first couple hundred yards I was wondering how much I had left in the tank for it. After that I started to clear up a little bit. Was very happy with the pace I was running and my position. Just wanted to keep plugging along.

On the second lap of the run the guy on the bike that I passed at mile 7 caught me and blew past me like I was standing still. He would then go on and catch the next person too! He was flying.

3rd place was in front me and I could see him but I just couldn't make up the time with such a short distance. If it had been a 5k I would have taken him down..but it wasn't. :)

The last hill leading to the finish was a bit of a bear. Really started testing my legs at this point going as hard as I did all morning.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure, I felt like I did pretty good on this.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, that's about it.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably could have stood on the climbs and cranked them out a bit faster...but for some reason I didn't even think about that!

I finished 4th overall so I was pretty happy. I actually beat the course record by 14 seconds...except so did 3 other people just faster than me!

Event comments:

I thought Kevin (RD) did a good job. It's listed as a no-frills duathlon and that's exactly what it is. Low key, good fun. Can't ask for much more.

Fabulous race, Jeff!

Congratulations on breaking the CR...

(too bad you can't control who shows up on race day or fame would be yours!)

I've never done R/B/R and wouldn't even know how to pace for it, but a slight positive split seems right. Boy, you were flying at the beginning but sure kept it enough in check on the bike to allow for a strong run the second time.

Well done!!!

Thanks guys.  Weird feeling though breaking a record but not even reaching the podium...not that there was one for this race but to not be in the top 3 lol.

The same race is happening again on Sunday but it's mothers day! So I can't do it.
