Hello all - I am new to the sport and am very excited about doing my "A" race in August of this year - the Boulder Peak triathlon - Olympic Distance - I plan on doing two sprints before then and hopefully one or two in September.

I have been terrible with planning my training schedule and hope to improve on that this week. I bike well - I enjoy swimming - but running just kills me - I play Volleyball about 6 hours a week and my knees are usually too sore to run the day after games. I guess I will have to give up at least one night a week in order to concentrate on the running.

If anybody in the Denver area has ideas on biking or running routes give me a holler. Also, I am always looking for riding partners.

I am 210 presently - down from 220 a month ago and hope to be under 200 for the tri - I purposefully signed up for the age-group instead of Clyde to give me incentive.

Hope everyone is having a great Monday and we will see you around.

Scott

Hi Scott,

I read your reply on my post. Way to go with the weight loss. I'm losing weight with the training too! It's wonderful. Probably another 30 lbs. to go.

You sound like you're in good shape, with all the volleyball and bike riding. Perhaps when you get more into the running, you'll enjoy it. It took awhile for me to find the joy in it, I was aching so much! Now it's my favorite cardio.

Great race schedule--good luck on them. I have two possibles, one at the end of August, the other the first week of Sept. I'm not sure which I'll enter. Whichever it is, I know I won't feel ready! I do have a training schedule. I'm not totally consistent, but at least it's some structure. The schedules on the home page here seem very good--I took one and modified it.

Good luck on your training!!

Mary

Hi Scott!  Well as far as bike/run trails, there's always the Platte River Trail for both.  I'm more familiar with Boulder bike rides.  I think there is a tri club in Denver, and I know there's one in Boulder (b/c I belong to it!).  And the BTC has group rides every Saturday (you don't have to be a member to ride).

Boulder Peak, huh?  Ambitious.  I recommend riding the hill (Old Stage Rd).  It's something like 15% incline.  I may volunteer for that race - good luck!

Hi Scott, and welcome to the site! Good luck with your training. Running is my (very) weak spot too, so I can sympathize! Let us know how the races go!

Hi Scott,

Sounds like you will be busy with racing this fall!!  Excellent!!  Have a great time, and enjoy the nice side benefit of getting into better shape.

Hi Scott! Don't know where in Denver you are located, but some of my favorite places to run are on the Cherry Creek Trail, Washington Park, and Cheesman Park. I also like to get in the foothills and do some trail runs (Mathew Winters and Apex are great). I mainly mountain bike, so I don't know any good road bike routes. The Cherry Creek Path would probably be a good spot, but it is mainly flat. Best of luck in your tri! Trish

Thanks Trish - I live in Golden so the trails are near me. I started on the mountain bike last week to build my endurance. Just doing Green Mountain was a lot more of a workout then 35 miles on the road bike. I think I will add at lease one if not two mtb rides in a week. - Have you done the Xterra off-raod tri?

Hey again Scott! Adding a couple mtb rides in a week would be great training, not to mention much better views! Funny you should mention Xterra's......I haven't competed in a tri yet, but this Saturday will be my first one (I'm a little nervous!) and in fact it is an Xterra in Buffalo Creek. I am doing the shorter sprint distance though, not the full. I will be doing the full Xterra in Keystone July 18. Have you thought of doing an Xterra?

I believe that you can still sign up. You should go for it! I am very new to this so I have no idea if my training is sufficient, but here is a sample of what my next few weeks will (actually I must say 'should hopefully') look like:

Monday/Wed: open water swim (approx 1 mile)/mountain bike ride (7-12 miles)
Tuesday/Thurs: run (6 - 8 miles) / possibly mountain bike
Friday: run or mountain bike or both depending
Saturday: open water swim, mountain bike (12 miles)/run (4-6 miles) brick
Sunday: rest or mountain bike
I fit two days of strength training in as well.

Let me know if you sign up for it. And I am always up for riding, so let me know if you're ever up on the trails.

Speaking of riding....what is going on with all this rain!!!!

That is a pretty intense schedule - Good Luck on Saturday - Are you staying near the race or driving up in the morning? Have you looked at the course yet? If you have been training for a while you should do fine. By the way, where do you do your open water swims? I just started swimming a couple of weeks ago at my gym and am still getting used to it. I really need to work on my technique..

I am most likely driving up in the morning. I rode the full distance bike course earlier this month. As Mary said check out the comsa.org website. I registered for this group and go to the Chatfield gravel pond for the open water swims. There is usually a large group of folks, which made it a little less intimidating for me. I wasn't quite as worried about drowning....I am a horrible swimmer! The group meets Mon/Wed 4:30-7:00PM and Sat 7:30-10:00 AM.

"It's your beauty, not your booty" Sorry..just saw.."next Friday" or "Friday after next" or "two weeks from the following friday" and that line was in it.."bootygirl" got it going in my head. Ok now that I got that out of the way...Thanks for the information Mary and Trish. I will check out the website and hopefully actually get some open water swimming in before I actually race. Hopefully your training is going well The weather has put a damper on mine. Have a great weekend and good luck Trish with the race. Give us an immediate update.
