My friend said he is willing to let me borrow his 2007 Louis Garneau Rocket aero helmet which fits, but it might be a little bit small. It is an older helmet and never crashed, but I was also thinking about picking up a new Giro Advantage 2. This will allow me to ensure a perfect fit and get the color that I want.

While money isn't really an issue, I know my wife is a little tired of me spending money on Tri-stuff right now.

So thoughts??? Slightly snug older helmet, or spend a little cash and get the perfect fit new helmet that matches the bike?

Oh and this is for the Boise 70.3 which is potentially very windy...

If it feels snug when you try it on for a few minutes, it could get really uncomfortable for rides >2 hours.  The only way to know is take it for a ride.

I would go with the used helmet if your friend will let you go for a long ride in it.

Also, if you can wait a while you will find a great deal eventually.  I found the Giro Advantage 2 on Nashbar for $75 a few months ago and have been happy with it so far.

Most helmet manufacturers will tell you to replace your helmet every three years.

But then most shampoo manufacturers tell you to lather, rinse, repeat, when there is no evidence that the "repeat" is necessary or effective, except in selling twice as much shampoo.

Get the helmet that fits.  The A2 is a slightly faster helmet, and you should rock an aero helmet for every race (Kona, being the possible exception, it's faster but a lot less comfortable).

If you do go with the LG, do a 2hr. ride in it and make sure it doesn't give you a ringing headache.

I ended up picking up an "once used" Advantage 2 off of Ebay and it should hopefully be here early next week. I'll give it a good once over to make sure there are no issues, but he seemed quite knowledgeable about TT's, he just had to quit because of an back problem.
