Subject: Sleeves vs long sleeve shirt

I have been reading a lot that arm sleeves are another way to keep cool in hot conditions.  I read that they work by keeping the sun off your arms and allows for a larger surface area for your sweat to evaporate and cool you.

My question is, why not just wear a long sleeve compression or other similar shirt?

I wear a long sleeve white lycra top I bought from the discount rack at Marshalls for less than $20. When the temperature is 60 degrees, I put a red nylon T-shirt over it and look like a stop sign.

There are a couple of reasons:

1. For non-wetsuit swims you don't want sleeves, and arm coolers are much faster to put on in T1 than a shirt (esp. when wet).

2. Cooling sleeves tend to work much better on the bike than the run, so sleeves are more easily ditched in T2.

3. Many folks have an existing tri suit or trem uniform they still want to use.
