Subject: Component compatibility Q for the wrenches

A llittle background:

I have Sora Shifters, front derailluer  and and triple crankset with Tiagra rear derailler and an 8 speed cassette on the back.  (UG.  I know.)

My front derailler, when it's adjusted to actually work, rubs a lot.  Especially in the middle chainring middle three small rings.  It's been to 3 different mechanics and I'm coming to the conclusion that it's time to just say the hell with it and upgrade.

I can't even find 8 speed shifters and derailleurs on line.  I would like to upgrade to a 10 speed setup anyway, but I need to do it as slowly as possible.  If I got an Ultegra triple front deraillerr for now, just to make the bad noise go away before I get BANNED from my club rides, can I use it with the Sora Shifters and crankset?  Or do I hav eto do it all at once (which I realize would be the best way, but I just can't).

Any other suggestions to help this problem are also greatly appreciated.  Thanks, C

Hi Cindy,

There is a compatibility chart at the Shimano web page.

http://bike.shimano.com/publish/content/cycle/sac/us/en/technical_service/compatibility_charts/road_compatibility.html

However, this page may win the prize as the most confusing piece of documentation on the web.  Boxes contain lists of components by number.   Boxes that are connected by a solid line are compatible.

I don't know the answer to your question but a lot of things do have to match up for the shifter to work well.  Good luck.

Unless your FD is bent or misalligned, new cables and a good tuning should do the trick, but 3 mechanics should have fixed that, so it might not be able to be fixed.

If you get a new triple FD, you may be fine as long the shop tunes the FD well. The main difference is the width of the chain.

Compatability issues will come with the RD, cassette, shifter, chain, BB, and Cranks.

If you wanted to upgrade just your FD that wouldn't cost too much, but unless you can find some good deals on ebay or online (mainly on 9 speed components) or have a frame worth saving (which I doubt since you have Sora and Tiagra components) then just save your money and don't buy a bunch of new components. New shifters alone will cost ~$200-$300 without counting the cost of labor.

Does anyone on BT have any familiarization with a Shimano HG-5A chain? I cant seem to find any documentation of the Shimano website (or anywhere else for that matter) about this chain and it's compatibilities. Thanks in advance.

There should be no reason you can't use the sora triple FD with your sora triple front STI.  It's the rear STI and derailleur when you get into trouble when mixing and matching 8sp and 9sp components.

The front shifter is not "indexed" like the rear so you can use it even all the way up to a Dura Ace front der.

If you change out to 9 or 10 speed you can use the same wheels since the cassette hub body will hold 8/9/10 cassettes. But you will have to change out your chain, chainrings, cassette, rear. der., fr. der. and rear shifter.

You should be able to find some decent shape 8-speed on EBay if you want to go that route (and save a bit of cash as well).

I was looking at the compatibility chart....confusing, yes.  It seems to say that the Sora and Tiagra stuff is pretty much only compatible with each other....so I would have to switch out my crankset and hub too?

Or am I reading the chart wrong, since Daremo you say the sora shifters can be used with an Ultegra FD?   I'm beginning to think I'm just screwed, and I am starting to wonder if it's worth all this on a Cannondale CAAD4 frame...although I like the frame and it fits me well.

The front der. will be narrower for 9 and 10 speed stuff, but the shifter should be the same as the higher models (in function). Like I said, it is not indexed. But the chainrings are narrower, so the crank spacing will be a bit narrower too, so yes, you would probably need to upgrade the cranks as well.

They did not make any triple 8-speed stuff in the upper models back in the day which is why they probably are saying the compatability is not there with the Ultegra/D.A. stuff.

A LOT of people have problems with the front triples on road bikes. My friend has a 105 equipped triple Specialized Allez and he always has issues with the front chainrings and the chain popping off when he downshifts. My old boss tuned it, and I tuned it and it works for a little bit and then goes back to the problem again. We can't figure out why .......

Is it worth it to upgrade a Sora equipped bike to a lot nicer components? That is a good question to ask yourself, most would say "no" and to buy an upgraded bike. But it is your money and time, not theirs.

As someone who only rides a double front, I cannot comment on the need for the small chainring, but going to a double would solve your problem. It just makes climbing a bit more "challenging."

I don't really know what "indexed" means.  Would you explain?

I have wrestled with this for a couple of years, and had made up my mind to wait until I'm out of school and then buy a new bike.  But I don't think I can ride it like this for 2 more years.  From what I"ve been told C'dale is known for making good frames and putting shoddy components on them.  I don't have any problem with the frame, I suppose it could be lighter but it isn't super heavy now.  And coming up with ~ $800 (prices from Performance Cycle, no labor included!) for components is still easier than coming up with a couple of grand for a new bike.  THen when I graduate I'd look for a tri bike.

I had pretty much already decided that I don't need the triple...in 3 years I may have used it 3 times...maybe.  I didn't think I could just switch to a double without changing out shifters and derailleurs anyway though?  And I'm still stuck with the 8 speed cog, which doesn't appear to be compatible with ANYTHING?  I can't even find a derailleur to go with it online....

Rick, you have been enormously helpful !  Some of this stuff is so technical that even when I try to read it online I just get more confused, so you explaining it is forever appreciated...

You know how in the back it has "clicks" that put it into each gear and as long as it is set correctly they line up and work right? The front doesn't have those "clicks" and you basically push to get it to go up and down. There are some stops/clicks in the front, but they do not align perfectly like in the back allowing you some flexibility to move the shifter just a little bit.

If you went for the front double then you would have to change out the bottom bracket and crank and the front der.

You CAN find older 8-speed stuff that should work. An example is:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-6400-Crank_W0QQitemZ7245674228QQcategor...

Getting a used Ultegra double and just replacing the chainrings for piece of mind issue would work, and you can find them pretty cheap usually. You can go to your LBS and they can figure out what BB you'll need, and then you can get an older Ultegra or DA front der. that will work with it.

Would I still have to change out my shifters?

You shouldn't, no.

At least that is my experience. The 8-speed stuff is spaced the same if I recall, regardless of whether it was the 90's 8-speed Dura Ace or the currect Tiagra/Sora stuff.

If you upgraded to 9 or 10-speed, then yes, you would have to replace them.

But to compare, you could go to 9-speed 105 "relatively" inexpensively. (prices are rough estimate)

Fr. der. - $20
Rear Der. - $35
Cranks/bb (double) - $100
9-speed chain - $15
9-speed cassette - $40
9-speed STI shifters - $100

Whole kit and caboodle for $315 or so plus labor to install it.

Rick - thank you - you've been a huge help.  Last question then I THINK I can finally leave you alone.  Where did you get the prices for the 105 stuff?  I've really only had time to look at Perf. Cycle,  they didn't have much 105 at all.

I don't trust my LBS - bad experiences - so I've decided it's time to find one that I like/trust.  MarkK and I are on our way out the door to poke our heads into one that is further away but highly recommmended by some good friends/experienced cyclists.  I'm going to talk to him and I will definetly have him price up what you just told me to include labor.  Thanks again

All those prices are similar to what I paid for new stuff from EBay two and a half years ago when I built this up with mostly 105 and some Ultegra:

You can get some really great deals on that kind of stuff from EBay. (And of course I built it all up myself). Thw whole bike was purchased for right around $1000 using 95% EBay purchases. Italian steel frame and all 105/Ultegra STI parts.

sWEET!  Unfortunately, I don't have the know how.  I went to a different bike shop today, the mech there thinks that just shifters will do the trick so I ordered some.

I wish I could do ebay but especially for something like this it scares me...I could spend a lot of money and still not fix the problem
