Subject: Are Carbon Pedals Worth the Money?

Looking for some advice on pedals.  I'm growing tired of moving my Shimano PD-R540s between my road bike and my tri bike.  Should I buy another set of the same or upgrade to carbon?  Sure the carbon is lighter, but are they worth the extra $100+?  For reference, my tri bike is a Specialized Transition Elite, so it not the lightest bike to start with.

Thanks for any input!

this is an easy one.  No.

If you're a pro, or seriously competitive amateur, and that last 1 second of performance is worth it to you- perhaps.  But other than that, save your money and get a good, regular priced pedal.

Carbon's only advantage is reduced weight.  It's less crash-worthy than aluminum.  Your pedals are 330g, so you can shave about 80g by upgrading to the aluminum Dura Ace pedals for about $150 more.  If you've got the bucks, go for it, but there are plenty of places to save weight on a bike for less than $2/g.

I'm with them, nope the carbon is not worth it.

I ride Ultegra pedals. The only difference between them and Dura-Ace is weight but the reduced weight also means the higher end ones don't have as much meat in them. When I go to replace these I'll probably get the metal Ultegra ones again unless I find a carbon set for about the same price. I won't spend much more just because they're carbon. The Dura-Ace ones aren't worth extra to me either. If I want to shave weight, I know where about 30 pounds can get taken off my setup before I worry about 100 grams or so.

but switching pedals is a real annoyance.  definitely spend the $50 on a second pair.  or, if you get the jiggles, spend $20 more and upgrade to the 105's or Ultegras.  I haven't really compared them to know the difference- so don't listen to me.

Things are only worth what people are willing to pay for them.

If you're asking whether carbon pedals will measurably improve your performance on the bike, then probably not.

But carbon is cool...Cool
