I was watching the Rev3 Knoxville race on TV today and one of the women got "pulled over" for littering. Couldn't figure out if it was from a cop or race officials, though it looked to be race officials due to the neon vests.

What are you supposed to do, (or what do you actually do) with your trash during a race? Are you supposed to wait til you get to an aid station and toss them there? What are the official rules on littering?

You can only drop in the designated area or get a penalty, I think it's a DQ but might be wrong. That's why a gel flask ( for me) is more convenient than the gel packs.

If you don't use a bento tuck it into a jersey pocket or into a trishort leg and dump it at the next aid station.

I thought there was a USAT rule specific to littering, but I couldn't find it.  The only thing I saw was this:

h. Abandoned Equipment. No participant shall leave any equipment or personal gear on the race course. Any violation of this Section shall result in a variable time penalty.

Mine go in my tri top pocket.

From what I remember being told at the athlete meeting, it is a time penalty.  I also just stuff them back in my pocket.

Saw a guy drop the tear-off edge of a Gu today at a duathlon. Also saw an abandonded half-full gel flask and a pair of sunglasses in the middle of the road...

I usually ball them up and try to hit some kid in the head who's spectating by the side of the road.

That's what used CO2 cartridges are for.

LH jersey pocket, RH pocket is for the un-used.

After I've seen how clean triathlon courses are because of that rule. I get a resentment every time I do a running race and have to slide through areas of discarded GU packets covering the ground.

I think it was KathyG who mentioned she tucks the used packets under the leg portion of her shorts so that's what I have done.

That is what I do for biking. You are all sweaty and nasty anyways so this makes no difference. On run I put in pocket

Setting aside the time penalty/DQ issues, it's also kind of rude . . . the sort of thing that might make a community not want to continue hosting races.  No one should struggle that much with what to do with trash on a ride; just be a good citizen and represent the sport well while you're out there.
