Subject: Runner going Triathlete

Hello...

Are you sure you all want me around? I have millions of questions. Hopefully I won't get too annoying. But if I've learned anything from my running career...asking for expert advice can save you pain, money, and trouble.

But, I guess I'll introduce myself first. I am Vieve -- a 28 year old runner with 1 Marathon, 4 Half-Marathons, and countless 10ks and 5ks under my belt. After 10 years of running, I now have a Oly Tri in the horizon for July.

I've purchased a road bike and swimsuit and have been training, but I am ready for your advice and help. And hoping to have some good discussion while I'm here, too. Appreciate the welcome!

Hey there.  Welcome to BT and triathlon!  Check out the Beginner link at the top of the page, under the Program button.  Check out the forums as well, tons of good info and support.  Absolutely ask lots of questions, people are happy to help.

Welcome, the best advice I can give as a fairly new triathlete myself is ask lots of questions and get a good solid training program.

I too came from a running background with a lot of marathons and such under my belt.  That was all great for overall fitness but for me swimming was the key.  After struggling for a couple weeks on my own I went to a class and then spent some time with individual coaching.  I'm still not a swimmer but have gotten my mile under 30 minutes which makes me at least respectable.

Good luck and have fun.

Unless you've already been a swimmer or learned properly at some point in your past, swimming is going to be the most difficult thing to master. I was a runner for 31 years before jumping into triathlon. Biking is a lot like running, it's mainly about time on the road. Swimming is highly technical, IMO it really pays to get taught properly at the start by a coach or in a masters swim group or you're going to find it very frustrating.

Good luck, the tri bug bites hard. But unlike a bug, it doesn't suck blood, it sucks money
