Extreme Veteran 481 | Subject: Mountain Man Triathlon - Olympic Distance : Official Thread This will be my first open water and first Olympic Triathlon and I am starting to freak out. Not about the swim, the climbing, or what I hear is a challenging run, but the speeds that people are hitting on the downhill portion of the bike. 40 - 50 MPH? I'm getting sick sitting here in my chair just thinking about it. |

Extreme Veteran 481 | Subject: RE: Mountain Man Triathlon - Olympic Distance : Official Thread Thanks for the reply. I guess I shouldn't say I'm not at all worried about the other things, but I am terrified of steep downhills. I am just starting to feel good about my biking, but I have a long way to go. |

Veteran 249 , Arizona | Subject: RE: Mountain Man Triathlon - Olympic Distance : Official Thread The stretch where I've hit 40+ mph is not a super steep descent. It's just straight and long and that allows you to really build up the speed. The roads are also not closed to traffic, so as tempting as it is to ride off the shoulder and on the road, you need to be aware that there will be auto traffic passing you. Some with trailers on them. |

Extreme Veteran 648 Scottsdale | Subject: RE: Mountain Man Triathlon - Olympic Distance : Official Thread Wade nailed it - the descent is not steep, just long with constant decline action. You can easily keep a fair pace by riding up and not in aero, and tap your brakes now and again. Holding 30mph should be pretty easy using this method, and you will most definitely get passed by other riders, but so long as THEY are watching what they are doing, and you know they are there, you should be fine. I was complete aero and tucked in, hammering all I could and only hit 45 last year, so the 50mph people are a bit more rare. |

The towers at South Mountain? The smaller climb up to the ramada on San Juan Rd at South Mountain? Heading up the Beeline? |

The last leg of San Juan, or the road just prior to Dobbins on South Mtn are pretty close in grade. The hill at Flag is about .8mi long (if I recall correctly), so riding South Mtn, Ftn Hills (Palisades/Golden Eagle/Sunridge), etc are all good training rides for Mtn Man. Beeline is too flat in comparison. |

And I'm antsy to get another race in after the Boise 70.3 debacle...I've heard horror stories about swimming at that altitude, but I'm hoping to get up there a couple times prior to see how I do...Love hard courses and t seems this fits the bill. If anyone is planning a trip up there for training let me know...I'll keep everyone posted as well. |

Master 1484 Sedona, AZ | Subject: RE: Mountain Man Triathlon - Olympic Distance : Official Thread Stay relaxed during the swim and you'll be fine. Concentrate on a smooth, easy stroke instead of trying to sprint. Scoot off to the side to get some open water, as the entry chute is kind of narrow. Also, watch for the people treading water around 50M out. This is where people get tired and have to stop. Smooth and steady - nobody wins in the swim. The hills aren't too bad. As everyone mentioned, you're not forced to go downhill fast. You can always drive up to Flag and ride Lake Mary road, there are tons of bikers there on the weekends and it will get you out of the heat. Finally, there's the sprint a month before the Oly. Its a good way to see most of the course and find out what to expect at that altitude. |

If anyone is planning a trip up there for training let me know...I'll keep everyone posted as well. I haven't swam this race, but I swim up in Breckenridge during the summer (almost 10,000 feet) and it IS different. Just knowing that at the start will help ease your nerves. Less Oxygen in the air means less O2 per breath, which can be uncomfortable if you aren't used to it. Like the others said, try to stay relaxed, and know that it takes time to get comfortable...it is easy to hyperventilate in the first part of the swim, so take it easy the first few minutes until you find your rhythm! I wish I could do this, but it is smack in the middle of vacation (Breckenridge), but I will be doing high altitude training up there! Good luck! |

Very fun course. Won't be ready for it like last year but I think I am going to do it anyway. Thinking of signing up for the half too in August. If you can do Bartlett Olympic "YOU" can do the Mt. Man events with no problem. |

The down hill course on the Bartlett Lake tri is very similar but not has long. Most likely not as steep too. Not sure what you are doing for the 4th of July but I can meet up with you at 6am and bike the Bartlett course with you if you like? Tracy |

AWESOME!!! We were thinking of taking an RV up there and camping as well...Should be a fun mini trip. I'll be doing Soma in Oct...Technically my first half after what happened in Boise. I really didn't put any thought into doing the half in August...that actually sounds like a good idea. Hmmm... |

Expert 932 Chandler, AZ | Subject: RE: Mountain Man Triathlon - Olympic Distance : Official Thread Yes, "bad conditions" is one way to put it...I heard a lot of other terms on race morning, though
And it looks like I'm sticking to the OLY and not going to do the half...I just think that the tapering/rest required for a HIM is going to eat away at some really valuable base building time for IMAZ. My 70.3 will have to wait until Soma.... Edited by JasenGuy 2012-07-05 6:21 PM |

Mojave Desert | Subject: RE: Mountain Man Triathlon - Olympic Distance : Official Thread How to they handle water for the Olympic? Been 10 years since I did an Olympic. I have 2 bottles for the bike and can wear a belt for the run if needed? Do they hand out bottles during the bike? Plenty of water stations on the run? |

Elite 3221 the desert | Subject: RE: Mountain Man Triathlon - Olympic Distance : Official Thread No aid stations on the bike leg for the OLY. There is a water station at mile 1.5, one at the top of the hill, and then youll hit the first one again on run heading back around mile 4.6 |
