Subject: Small Slit in rear tire - Replace it?

OK, I'm still a newbie on this bike stuff so I'm reaching out to the experts.

I have a new set of Conti GP4000s tires on my bike (~200 miles) and did a Century ride last Sunday.  Apparently I hit something I should not have because I now have a small cut in my rear tire.  I didn't flat or anything, but just gave both tires a good once over after my ride and noticed it.

I've got a HIM in 10 days so I'm wondering if I should swap this out with a new tire to be safe or just ignore the slit.  If it were just training I'd probably ride it and see how it goes, but with my race I'm a little more concerned.  What do you guys think?

Here's some pics:

Tire fully inflated:

Tire deflated, pinch test.  Seems pretty deep all the way down to the kevlar (or whatever is down there that did its job and kept me from flatting)

I'd replace it. If for nothing else piece of mind while your out on the bike course. I was riding the same Conti tires and the sidewall blew out had a few more miles than 200 on them took them back to my LBS and they swapped them out for FREE.

personally I'd let it go. Looks like a small glass shard cut, not all the way through.

I've filled those cuts with Aquaseal and seems to hold pretty well, or do nothing.

...wait..read again...Yes, I'd replace it for the race...sorry! keep it for a spare training tire.

Inflate the tire to max
Put a drop of super glue in the slit
Deflate the tire
Let it sit overnight.
Ride it to death.

Anything pea sized and smaller that works like a charm for.

I recently had side wall cuts in both my tires. Tried the super glue trick and it worked for about 100 miles until I ended up with "pinch flat" right where the slit was In the front tire. If I were you I'd bite the bullet and get a new fire especially for the race!
Good luck at kansas by the way!

Thanks guys, I think I'll actually do both.  Fix it and get a new one.

I'm getting some carbon wheels in a couple months and plan to have another set of Conti's on them.  So I'll buy the new tire and use it to race on (just for the peace of mind) and fix the one with the slit with superglue and leave it on my training wheels.

Scroll down for the pic in this thread. This happened to me today. Looks Locke the cause was a slit in the sidewall...http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=443029&posts=22&start=1

This works wonderfully.  I'd add a step to clean out with isopropyl or something first to make sure the superglue adheres well, but I have glued many a tire with good success.

Pretty normal... bet if most of us look at our tires, we will see something very similar. Super glue trick works well.

I would say continue to ride it, your tire looks in good shape otherwise. If you have an A race coming up, then replace it for that race and then afterwards switch back again (keep the race tire for next season)
