Subject: Mens vs Womens wetsuits for a TALL woman
I am trying to decide on a wetsuit. I am 6'1"/6'2" and 180 lbs. I would say I am a lot of leg but still have a long torso, flat chest.  I fall into a women's largest size or mens large mostly according to the size charts/info for the wetsuits I am considering (Neosport mostly because of cost).  Is there a big difference between the two?  I am sure the bust is cut differently but for me that doesn't matter much.  Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

Men have broader shoulders (typically longer torsos as well proportionally) so the wetsuit should be wider up top and longer.  I'm not an expert in the difference between the two but there is a guy that posts on the Slowtwitch forums who works for Nineteen - his handle is Fleck.  You might want to ask him.

Do you live near a store that you can try them on?

Fit is really key. Many women wear unisex or men's wetsuits. It can be issue for curvy women.

There are good deals to be had on the web.  For example Xterra offers 40-50% almost all the time.

Trisports is having a sale real soon and all wetsuits will be 25% off.  Kathy is right that Xterra wetsuits can also be purchased at roughly 50-60% of.   This is there business model in that they sell direct and don't go thru retailers.

You should look at Xterra anyway, since they offer a Tall size in most categories.   Your stats don't "fit" into their size calculator as a woman, but as a man they suggest a Men's Medium Long (which sounds right to me...).

Regardless, my first wet suit was a sleeveless "unisex" (which we all know means mens) suit and it was fine, and I have plenty of curves and a decent bust.   But I think if you're thinking arms, you want to be more careful.

looks like Xterra discontinued its Mens Med long I ordered a sleeveless Neosport mens large. Should be here today and I can see how it fits. If its not good, I will call Xterra and see what they suggest.  Thanks for all the help! It stinks not to have any stores to try them on, especially given my body type.

I tried the Med Long 6'4" 180lb male. It was to small. Went up to the large and is really tight until you get it wet then fits good. The arms and legs of the suit are short on me. I don't think they make a tall version per se.

**UPDATE**

I got the sleeveless mens Neosport yesterday, and for future women who do a search on this I would say it runs perfect except for the chest. I have a small chest so for me it wouldn't be a major issue but if you are bigger, you may have half a boob in the arm hole of the mens due to the way its cut.  I am sending mine back because even though I don't have that issue, if its not a great fit why keep it?  I ordered a mens Xterra medium large full suit--again I am 6'1"/6;2" (I reweighed myself and all this tri training has me around 175 so I think the large would be too big).

For all the tall ladies I will be back to report how that fits.

I use Xterra Vector Pro Sleeved and Sleeveless, both Med-Large size. And I'm 6'3" 175-180. Sounds like it should be about the right size for you.  For a guy, I'm a little smaller in the chest, a little bigger in the leg than most. So we might be pretty close.  The fit was a bit tight at first, but I thought this was how it's supposed to be to start. After a few swims, I have gotten used to it, and it is easier to use now so I will be keeping it. Think it may have stretched or adapted slightly with some use. For me, the sleeves do end several inches up my arms. Seems common for taller people, as the fit around the shoulders is the crucial area. The legs are well up onto my calves as well.

It seems to be working nicely once I figured out how much to pull up the sleeves, where to put the bodyglide, and getting the inside of the suit wet.

Just wanted to update in case in the future someone searches for this topic.  I ended up getting an Xterra full suit, size Mens Med Large.  Its awesome and fits perfectly. Returned the Mens neosport (the cut of the chest on the mens sleeveless make wearing it as a woman not so appealing).

Great! Have you been able to swim in it?

Yes. It is fantastic--made a big difference for me in terms of making me calm down enough to stroke and breathe correctly.  I am glad I went with the full suit

Thank you for posting this. I am 6' tall with a longer torso and have been having issues with sizes as well. I just rec'd the XTerra Vortex Sleeveless in a Men's med but it does seem to have ginormous cutouts for the arms. I may have to give in and get the full suit

I am posting here because I want other women to know that wearing a men's wetsuit is indeed possible! I recently purchased a men's neosport sleeveless wetsuit, and it fits just fine. I have an athletic building (wide shoulders, small chest, narrow hips). At 5'8 and 135 I wear a men's medium. Why did I go with a men's? Because the men's neosport was $75 cheaper on Amazon than the women's. That's a big difference. If you're found in a similar situation, why not give it a shot? Just order in enough time for your event.

DeSoto two piece suits would probably be the better option.

I'm a guy, but have fitting issues since I am 6' but have 29" inseams, broad shoulders, relatively narrow hips. Getting a suit that fits was a real PITA, but have found the beauty of the two piece.
