In the book it shows sculling as a circular motion, but every video on youtube shows it is pretty much side to side.  Which is it?  Any good videos you can suggest on this?

Actually, in the book, it is not a circular motion at all. The upper arms are completely still, while the forearm to fingertips are held in a straight line. The sculling motion (there are many kinds of sculling drills) described in the book is outward (away from the midline of the body, but at a diagonal) and inward (toward the midline, but again, diagonal, not flat palms toward the midline).

I believe this video demonstrates the sculling drill described in the book.

Very helpful, thanks!  In the Figure 6.10 it shows a circular motion, so it was a bit confusing.  Tried to do it yesterday in the pool and had no luck.  Looking forward to doing this next week.

Wait a minute. Color me a newbie, but why would you scull not on your back? It's the only way I know how to scull.

It's just a drill to learn/develop better feel for the water.  As you can see from the video, she's actually standing in the pool and is not trying to propel herself at all, just "feel" her hands & forearms creating resistance in the water.

The best way Ive heard it described, is that when your stroke is returning underwater, you make a "hourglass shape" or the outsides of a figure 8 with your hand.

Hope this helps!

This is different than the sculling drill described. But that's another can of worms.

Well,, you do need to watch it past 30 seconds.  I don't disagree with the point of the drill, but it is eventually done moving forward, and I think that's important.
