My name is Whitney and I'm a senior in highschool. This summer I decided to go for the plunge and do a triathlon. I have a few years of running history, was on the swim team my junior year and have been an athlete my whole life, so I feel like this will be a challenge for me but I know I can do it.

Obviously I'm not going into this alone. One of my friends is training with me, but he made his workout and I made mine, and we will see who comes out on top! I just have a few questions, as would anyone doing this for their first time. I only have a mountain bike to train with, and I don't know how much of a difference it will make in the race but I'm lacking in resources to buy a new road bike, I'm sure they are really expensive. Should I worry about this?

Also the tri is on August 14, 2004. That's 2 months from now. With a strong athletic background, is that enough time to train?

I'm really excited about this. It definatly won't be my last race. I really want to continue training and racing as I get older.

Hi Whitney! Welcome to the site. Two months should be plenty of time to train, given your current activity level. No worries there! And don't worry about the mountain bike either. Plenty of people use them in races. They are a bit slower than a road bike, though, so if you get a set of slick wheels for it, it would help. It's certainly not a requirement though.

Good luck!

Welcome!  Yeah, use the mountain bike!  What is the distance of your tri?  Assuming it isn't REALLY long (like an ironman), then 2 months should be fine.

Good luck

Hi and welcome...I'm using my mtn bike for my tris this year. I put road tires on and saved 10 minutes on my 30K ride....whoo hoo....watch out for the gravel though....totally different feel than those off road tires...not expensive either...cost me $40. installation included....

Good luck on your tri!!!

where can you get road tires for a bike? Obviously that's a lot cheaper than buying a whole new bike. I will look into that. Thanks
