Priced very low at several sites. Surely there must be something wrong. Brand, components...ect

Nothing, really, except that the model has been around a while and I expect they're just blowing out remaining stock.  And as a strictly internet dealer their low overhead is reflected in their prices.

Bikesdirect is a legit outfit, lots of people have and like this bike, frames are generally good quality and 105 components while not top-of-the-line are generally considered fine for serious cycling.

There's nothing wrong with it at all. A decent frame and decent components, both race worthy.

The only thing I dislike about the Talon (and I used to have one) is that the geometry is neither a road geometry, nor a tri geometry... the reversible seat post can either get to close shallow enough for a road position, or it can get you semi-steep (not steep enough for me though...) for a tri position, but the real problem comes to the front end... it's too slow for a road position, and doesn't feel stable enough for a tri position.

Would someone be better off buying this bike or an entry level aluminum bike?

Depends if it fits... You're better off with a cheap beginners boe that fits than the best super bike that doesn't.

The Kestrel does make for a good deal if it fits and you like the feel of the bike. The Kestrel does feel a bit "dead", I.e. the road feedback is muted.

At $1300 from an on-line retailer- that's probably exactly what that bike is worth.  It's an older frame, not particularly lively or stiff.

As was stated by Jan above, it's not a tri geometry so it will be hard for you to get a good, comfortable aero fit (possible tho, depending on your frame).    If you are going to buy this bike, it's probably a decent buy as a road bike, but for a few hundred more, you could get yourself a really terrific aluminum bike (yes, I'm thinking of the Cannondale CAAD 10-5) from an LBS.

bikes direct is a legit business, but their 'deals' always seem better than they are for what you're getting.  I expect that they sell most of their bikes to people fairly new to the sport and are trying to save a few bucks.

Kestrel does make some terrific products, so it's a once-again up and coming brand.  The 4000 is a top of the line TT bike by any measure.

Nothing wrong with it (2X Kona champ Macca used to race one about 10 years ago).  The frame is a bit dated and the molds are paid for so the bikes are cheaper.  Newer carbon bikes are going to be faster, but this bike was right up there a decade ago, and it's still a full carbon steed at a bargain.  Makes a great first tri bike, but won't compare to a P3 or Shiv.

Average price for what it is. As someone said, this is old stock.

Nothing is fishy with the price!

Nytro sells this bike as part of their "everything you need for $2k" triathlon starter package:

$1,300 for a full carbon bike and solid 105 components is a pretty good deal, IMHO.

I ride a Talon and have no issues with it. The best part about Kestrel is the "lifetime" warranty on their frames. My brother had an 04 Talon. When I went to get a tune up on it, so I could ride with him, they told me their was a crack in the chain stay. I brought the bike into my local Kestrel dealer and they sent the bike in and Kestrel sent me a 2011 frame, with no questions.

I rebuilt the frame with a SRAM Force group, new wheels and an Adamo Road saddle. The bike rides like a dream.
