Subject: Do you drink water during a swim workout?

Just wondering if anyone drinks water (or sports drink, etc.) while at the pool.  I never do simply because I never feel thirsty during a swim workout, even one that's 45+ minutes.  But I see a lot of other people at the pool with water bottles or Gatorade.

I do occasionally feel very thirsty *after* I swim, but never during.

I do because my throat get's scratchy at my pool.  Not so much because I'm thirsty

If the pool is heated (80-88F) or I am planning a long workout I make sure to keep a water bottle around and actually drink.

I've done it a couple of times for really long sets (1hr+) during IM training but not as a general rule.

I just swam a 4.4 Mile OWS <--- (race report) and took in at least 1 cup of brackish, gasoline laden water.  Is that what you mean?

When I am swimming for more than an hour, I take a few sips between sets.

I usually bring a water bottle with me but I don't actually drink until after I'm done.

No, never during.  I usually have a small sip or two in the locker room then several cups by the pool when done, but I usually only swim 1500-2500 yards in a workout.

Hah, Mike, too funny.  I think I had more than a cup of Bay.

I bring a bottle to most swim workouts, but I only actually drink it during workouts longer than about 90 minutes or so.   I occasionally use it to wash the taste of water aerobics lady perfume out of my mouth.

X2 - I always sip gatorade during a workout, mainly because it's first thing in the morning and my body is already partially dehydrated, and also because I used to get calf cramps but not so much now that I take better care of my hydration. And why not, it's a workout, if you're not working that hard then why bother?, right? just MHO

Hahaha - that was my first thought about this thread!

I don't drink during swim workouts because I won't be drinking on the actual swim (well, except because I suck at bilateral breathing). Whereas I will potentially be drinking on the bike and run legs, so I will drink during those trainings.

Other than the one I'm swimming in?

I used to bring a water bottle to the pool with me but I've stopped, I should drink but I don't.

If the swim's longer than 4K or so, yes. But I've done up to 3 hours in the ocean without water, so it's not strictly necessary (for me). However, I stay incredibly well hydrated, probably more so than most people, at all times. I don't just pay attention to hydration in the week or so before a big training weekend or race. I'm always well hydrated.

In general, no.  I might bring a bottle of water in if I know it's going to be 4k or longer.  Even then, I just take a sip (excuse to rest)

I seem to drink plenty of pool water during my workouts...so I don't bring my own.

Haha yeah, I guess I should have put "intentionally" in the title. Smile  I usually get a gulp or two of pool water myself...

Sounds like there are some different opinions though.  I might try bringing along some water sometime.
