Subject: climbing improve flats?

With LP around the corner I've been doing (including this morning) some hill repeats just to get better at climbing.

Does working on your climbing help you on the flats?

I realize this is partially a retarded question as any cycling helps...but I wonder if doing hill repeats is doing that much for me.

For example.  Should I do an hour of hill repeats or two hours of flat riding?  Does the repeats cross help on the training?

Yes, it helps.  A lot.

IME, the transition from fitness in the hills to speed on the flats is very quick.  Do one or two rides where you dial in your ability to hold aero and a steady effort and you're there.  The transition in the other direction takes much longer.

Absolutely it helps on the flats!!! You're basically improving your power output, and that will benefit you no matter where you are.

Yes, it will help on the flats. What you're doing is essentially high-tension intervals. That will increase your strength in the pedaling motion. That's not a bad thing. BUT... Beware that you're also most likely working at a significantly lower cadence. Not that it's bad, just make sure you're not translating that lower cadence onto the flats.

Yes, it certainly helps.

Speed on climbs is mostly a function of power-to-weight ratio. Speed on flats is mostly a function of power-to-frontal-area ratio. So increasing power helps both. But on the climbs it matters a lot how heavy you are, and on the flats it matters a lot how aero you are.

Hills are similar to interval workouts.

They require a lot of power for a short amount of time.

They will definitely help you on the flats since they should increase your W/kg
