Subject: Rear Tire problems on trainer?

On a recent thread, people were discussing how they swap out the back tire when they work out on the trainer.  This makes sense if you have a super expensive tri bike with expensive tires and wheels.  But, really, what is the risk if you don't swap the back one out?

I have one bike, an old roady converted with aero bars.  I have 2 tires, one in the front and one in the back.  They aren't crazy expensive, but were top of the line back 10 years ago.  I'm not sure I am ready to commit changing that back tire out every time I go from trainer to road since it is messy and seems to be a waste of time.

S what am I risking by not swapping out my back tire with a trainer dedicated one?  Am I slowly damaging the wheel?  Will the tire develop some sort of risky wear pattern?  Is there something else that will go wrong if I don't swap out my tire?

It'll wear faster and you'll have black dust all over the rug behind your trainer.

Yep!

I change my tires out on a weekly basis and I like the practice.  I'm getting more efficient at it which will help me on race day should I get a flat and need to take off the tire to patch/replace the inner tube.  =)

Yup that helped me out 2 years ago, I can change out a tube quick and had to do it in a race.  Then I got lazy and bought another wheelset and the OEM is dedicated to trainer use with a trainer tire on it.

And to Daniel's point,it really does depend on the tire type. Some are gummy POS and will shred, others will stand up to the trainer much better such as the Conti Gatorskin hardshell tire, but I wouldn't be racing on that tire.

Oh, before I changed out my old Rubino Pro tire (2000 miles on it)to my new GP4000's, I put it on the trainer to see how long it would last. Rubber was gone and the cords were showing after the 2nd session.

I have 63.15 hours (1127.05 "miles") on my Micheline Pro Race 3 on my Kurt Kinetic.  I don't know if it's because the tire is a slick or what, but I have ZERO issues with it.  No dust, no excessive wear, nada.

I used the tire outdoors for the 2010-2011 season and had a wire go through the side wall. Left a big enough hole that a bit of tube would bubble out.  I stuck a tube patch over it with some rubber cement (inside of the tire).  That's why I retired it to the training wheels (Mavic Aksiums).

I'm always amazed when I read these threads about having to swap tires...

You aren't risking the wheel.  You will wear the tire faster and require a new one more frequently.  That's all.

But changing the tire is also good practice and should eventually take you no more than a few minutes.

My wife destroyed her tire on the trainer.  I wasn't surprised.

I think I will start with this option.  Worst case scenario, I use up the Gatorskin and buy a trainer-specific tire next.  Until I prove to myself that I will be consistent on the trainer, I can't justify a trainer-specific wheel/cassette/tire purchase and there's no way I'm going to change out the tire every time.

My trainer tire has lasted since 2008! And I do a decent amount of trainer riding.

I did try to take it outside, and realized there was absolutely no tread on the trainer tire. Stopping was questionable. Ha!

The easiest thing is to have a dedicated bike for the trainer!

I think he is saying that he switches from road tire to trainer specific tire on a weekly basis.  I'm the same - because of my current schedule, I usually ride the trainer during the week and outside on the weekend.  That leads to two tire swaps per week.  It takes less than three minutes to complete the swap and have my bike on the trainer.

Yep!  two tire swaps every week until I get a wireless powermeter setup.

Cute kitty kat though, thanks!  I love kitty kats.  ^_^

I think if your tires are 10 years old, you should replace them anyway.

Yeah, that caught my eye!  Or you're not riding enough!

Honestly, if you're good at changing the tire, it will only take a couple minutes.  If you're not good at it, it would be smart to get some practice in, and switching it out for a trainer tire and back when needed is good practice.  If you get a flat in a race, you'll appreciate that you practiced.

I can understand if you just don't want to spend the money on the trainer tire, but having trouble understand the "there's no way" you're going to change it out part.

I bought the bike used. It sat for years according to the previous owner. I probably do need new tires. Are they supposed to lack all tread? Cause mine do. I just figured it was like racing slicks for a car.

I would like to have a trainer wheel/tire setup that I could just swap out, but I don't. I'm definitely not going to change my tire every weekend and then back again. I just have cheap wheels and tires though.

I never notice any black dust on my roller or floor around the trainer after a ride. After the equivalent of around 500 mi on my rear tire it still looked fine. I did just replace it though because of a large piece of metal that ruined it on my last ride. I guess I will see how the new tire holds up to the trainer.

I purchased an inexpensive wheelset <$150 off of e-bay and put an old tire on it. It is specifically for the trainer-use only. It is easier to change out a the wheel than the tire every time
