Seriously?

No. Everything ridden in a cycling group should be mass start legal.

If you bring your disc, tri bike, or aero helmet you should probably be beaten.

A disk is mass start legal.

In a mountain stage in the Coors Classic a member of the 7-Eleven team (Ron Kiefel?) rode a disk rear wheel in an attempt to gain an aerodynamic advantage on the main field and escape on the descent to the finish.

The attempt failed and I recall Davis Phinney laughing about the scheme after the stage.

The booger with a rear disk is they usually make distracting noises and they don't absorb road shock well. They may also affect handling, making the bike more stable (like the veritcal stabilizer on an airplane).

In the sometimes conservative world of cycling they also look a trifle out of place on a mass start ride.

Maybe if and ONLY if, they were good friends, and I was getting my gear in order for a race and explained that to them.  A test ride, per say.

Yes...Seriously.

And this is not being lazy, but practical.  Taking the disc cover off and on between rides and races is a pain.  And the more you mess with something the more likely you are to break something.

I ride my roadie with aerobars on it all the time in group rides...don't use but they are there.

I've never seen a disk in a mass start road race. I didn't know that was legal. I couldn't find it in the rules.

Looks like if the rims are higher than 2.5cm, the wheels have fewer than 16 spokes or have a spoke thickness of over 2.4mm, they have to be in this list.

Are there any disks in this list?

i have seen disc's in cyclocross races. seriously.

As a poster above said, if i was doing a shorter group ride with some triathletes and had to shake the bike down prior to a race, yes i would ride a disc in the group.

A full blown roadie outing, i would not even have my TT bike, it would be on my road bike.

Not using aerobars even though they are on the bike...easy.

Not using disc cover even though it's on the bike...not so easy.

Since I'm one of the only people who said 'yes', I'll offer some support.  I, too, ride a with a disc cover.  I would not go out of my way to install it for a group ride (or most any training ride, for that matter).  Bit if it were on in anticipation of a race (or just left on after a race and I had been too lazy to remove it yet), I could care less what others in the group might think about it in a ride.  I realize I would be "that guy".  So what?

Personally, I would take the time to remove the cover if it was going to be a formal group ride.  If it was just a ride with some friends before a race, I probably wouldn't take it off...but at the same time I wouldn't be in the pack either.  Just doing my own thing off the front or back, and trying to avoid crashing, or running over glass with my nice race tires.
