Subject: HELP! I use bike shoes pre-clipped-for T1 but have question about going into T2

Hi Gang,

So....I use the bike shoes pre-clipped in method and it has always worked great for me!  HOWEVER, in my last tri, after I dismounted (barefoot) kept shoes on bike and was running my bike back to T2, one of my shoes tapped the ground heard and clipped OFF... I didn't realize until I was nearly back to my trans area... and luckily I DID get my shoe back (after the race)... But I was wondering.. any tricks to make sure THAT doesn't happen again?  And/or has that ever happened to anyone else?  I'll use rubber bands to NOT drag on the way out of T1 but what the heck do you do going IN to T2?  Racing tomorrow in Pleasant Prairie/Olympic & in 3 weeks 70.3 Racine...  THANKS!

I'm not sure there's anything reasonable you can do to keep them from dragging in T2--surely trying to bungee them up would take more time than just clipping out and running in them.

I'd offer two bits of advice:

1.  Try to make sure you don't back the bike up at all or bounce it too much.

2.  Maybe tighten up the pedal release tension a bit so shoes won't come out as easily.  Make sure you can still unclip if necessary in an emergency, but if you're planning to keep the shoes in the pedals you can run a fairly high release tension

Tighten the tension.

Keep the bike moving only forward -- no side to side motion.  Forward motion doesn't unclip the shoe.  Side to side does.

My husband just did his first duathlon using his cleats pre-clipped in. When practicing he had his cleats hit the ground and lost a shoe so he went ahead and increased the tension in his cleats. Today his cleats hit the ground while coming into transition but didn't pop out with the higher tension.

Thanks All... I'll have to throw caution to the wind for tomorrow's race since my bike's already racked and I'm not messing w/tension in the morning.  HOWEVER, I will make sure to not go anything other than FORWARD (no sideways and/or backing up) going into T2...  Actually, I think I'll use that good piece of advice for the whole race  Laughing

Many thanks!

Sometimes a lost shoe just happens.  Not sure there is a whole lot you can do to prevent it.

The forward motion is good advice, and when you dismount, try to keep the pedals horizontal to the ground so as to lessen the chance of the shoe hitting the ground.

The guy right in front of me going into T2 had this exact same thing happen. He left his shoe. Hope you had a great race...it was perfect out there!
