Interesting, the favorable reviews seem to skew toward people who already knew what they were doing it seems like.

Every book is going to have a target audience.

1:10 IM split for a freezing choppy non-saltwater swim is pretty damn good.

To me - this book is great - and I'll explain why.  I'm a self-taught swimmer; my schedule makes it next to impossible to get coached.  So I'm learning everything via youtube and reading.  I started out just under 2 years ago using TI and that has worked out great.  I went from being unable to swim 25m to swimming 6K in just under a year.  Excellent and I'm really proud of it.  I'd recommend the TI training materials (books, DVDs, etc) to anyone just starting out.  But TI never seems to go past that "novice" stage.  I felt stuck at a speed and I just wasn't improving.  This seems (at least to my simple mind) to be the next step after TI.  The material may not be ground breaking - but it's presented in a manner self-taught swimmers, like myself, can digest and incorporate into their normal routine.

My pull is not yet really good but it's so much better than it was. This video Suzanne posted is something I believe will help me over the next hump. http://www.sprinttriathlontraining.org/swimming/how-to-swim-faster-like-uncle-sam-the-army-guy. There was a whole thread on this video but it disappeared? Not sure what happened there.

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this video.  That was a really huge lesson for me.  I'm a crappy swimmer and after watching it, I suspected horizontal arms and was very right.  I drilled the way the video shows and immediately noticed a huge difference.

Odd thing is, my forearms and triceps were very sore after even 100 yards.  They are obviously weak and my lats have been compensating for the last 6 months.  I really tried to "anchor" my arm and use the rest of me to pull along, but I noticed if I don't concentrate on my arms, the elbow drops so I think it'll be a few months before I get that strength up.

Don't think of it as strength oriented...thing if it as re-education and re-balancing of the muscle groups involved. Swim as slowly as you need to to make it happy ("Perfect speed"). over time you'll see your times improve, your stroke count go down and become more sustainable. Until then simply to shorter repeats, take longer rest or reduce total swim volume as the re-education takes place.
