Hi, I just signed up for the Danskin Triathlon in Webster, MA on 8/1/2004. Why did I sign up? I have never done a tri, and I need a goal. I do some mountain biking and running, but am a terrible swimmer. I am 42 years old, and 142 pounds. I was down to 127 pounds last year, but family life got crazy for a while, and I gained back all the weigh I had lost.

My training has to part of life because otherwise it will not get done. For instance, today, I hauled my 5-year old son on a trailer-bike on a 6 mile ride with a lot of hills. We stopped at the coffee shop for a snack. I have to keep the rides fun for my kids otherwise, they will not come, and then I won't get anytime in the saddle. My hubby is supportive and he is a competitive mtn biker. So some nights he rides, and some nights, I get a run or ride in.

I am going to have to work at getting the swimming in. All winter, I would swim laps (backstroke) during my son's 1/2 hour swim lesson. I feel I can do the backstroke forever, but I exhaust myself with 1 lap of the crawl. I know it is becuase I don't have the technique or breathing.

Any other people in similar situations as me?

- Maureen in Maine.

Welcome!  good luck in your tri!

I struggled with swimming also!  Over time, I have had an immense amount of improvement!  I think it takes time, and watching other swimmers.  Get as much advice from others as you can!  I'm also taking a swim class through my local tri club, which has made a huge difference.

Hang in there!  It will get better.  And if you get into trouble, you can do any stroke you want!

For this tri, I am planning on doing the backstroke. If I get hooked like so many others, I will taken some swim lessons at the Y, and learn how to crawl properly.

Thanks for the encouragement!!

if it makes it any easier, think of the crawl as your 'reverse-backstroke'...ie, your on the other side and your arms are turning the other way...maybe its just the psychological trick u need.   but seriously, i couldnt do 1 lap of freestyle without stopping midway to stand or switch to an easy stroke when i started.  u just gotta get past the 'pain' and it will all come together.

by the way...welcome.

Hi maureen,

Rons right I found I had to force myself to continue past one lap when I started.  Taking a class will help alot.  So your from southern maine?  Good Luck in the Danskin that will be alot of fun.

Yes, I am in southern Maine. Waterboro, to be precise. Is there a way to search on line for others in this area? Sometimes I think it would be fun to have a training partner, but frankly my schedule is so screwy, that I don't think that would work. I like the online training partners!

Today, I took the kids to the track at the high school and ran a few intervals - 100 yard sprint every lap of the track. I only did it 4 times - I was huffing and puffing! I usually jog between 3 and 6 miles, but I go along at my comfortable pace. These sprints really did me in. But I met a guy at the track who did his first marathon recently and he is preparing for Beach to Beacon 10 K race. He gave me lot of encouragement and advice. Fun!
