Subject: Paris Mountain International Triathlon : Official Thread

There were a couple of questions on this race in another thread so I thought this would be a little better place to answer. I have done the race twice. Once it was early in the year and wetsuit legal. The second time it was in the summer and hot. It is not an easy course except the swim. The swim is very short. The bike starts out around the base of Paris mountain with a bunch of rollers followed by the climb up Paris mountain. If you haven't done the climb, I would suggest at least one practice run on it. It is a long and steady climb. You get a split from the base to the summit which is cool if you consider yourself a good climber. The descent is fast and a little technical. At least one rider was fairly mangled in a crash last year. The run is almost completely flat for the 2 miles then you climb back up to the summit and then run down a mountain bike trail. You then get down to the trails for at least another mile run through the woods. There were a few people walking around at the finish with bandages from tripping on roots or slipping on pine needles. It is a tough race. Only the finishers get a tee-shirt. Left-overs are supposedly burned.

The sprint is a piece of cake. Just remember to do 2 laps on the bike.

Thanks for posting this! I'm really feeling like signing up, that climb just seems like a monster. I think I'll try it next week and see how it goes.

A close friend of mine is the one that went down last year. He suffered a pretfty bad concusion but is doing much better now, in fact he's doing the 1/2 iron in muncie, In this weekend. Not sure exactly what happened but best we can figure is he was carrying to much speed into a turn on the descent. Use caution!

Sorry to hear about your friend. I'm glad to hear he has recovered. The first sharp turn off the summit is well marked and you get plenty of warning but the longer 2nd turn is where most people have problems. There is a stone wall that seems to suck in pedals. You can easily hit 40-45 mph on the descent so be careful.

There is a nice loop from downtown Greenville out to Paris Mountain and back on Old Buncombe Rd. It is fairly well marked on the pavement. I usually leave from Caine Halter Y and it ends up being about 30 miles. There may be a group that leaves from Carolina Triathlon on the weekend but I'm not sure if they are still doing it.

Yeah, I'd be interested in giving it a shot with someone else, although looking at your training logs, you're a good bit faster than me.

it's cool, i don't want to ride it hard or anything; just scout the course to know where the big elevation changes and turns i need to watch for are

every training session i have i think about this race.  its going to be hard. i'm afraid of it. it is going to hurt, it is going to hurt worse than any race i have done before.  it will be worse than the +1400ft elevation climb 5k i did.

the ride is going to hurt near the end.. but it is the run i think will be the worst part of this event.  i would prefer to climb the mountain on the trails and come down the road...but its the other way around instead.

I really don't think you want to go up the trails running. They are bad enough running down. Running up the hill is really not all that bad if you are used to running on hills

  • Come join TYB this Saturday at 8am at Paris Mountain State Park to pre-ride and run the Paris Mountain Sprint Triathlon Course. All are welcome!

First lap of the bike course will be nice and relaxed and the second lap will be at your own effort. Then, after the ride we will throw on our running shoes and do a controlled preview of the run course. Join us if you can!

Thinking of doing this as a training race. Any advice?  I am in Charleston so no mountains to train on.  If I do it should I do it on my tri bike or my road bike.  My tri bike is a standard double and the road bike is a compact.  I know I won't be fast just looking for a good day of training.  Any other info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I personally use my tri-bike on all non-draft legal races. I have gone up and over Paris Mountain plenty of times with my tri-bike and have seen others do the same. It is actually a little worse coming down without having you hands on the brakes.

if this is a training race for you, then you are a BAMF.  although i think i am over-hyping this race to myself.

if you are doing it for training you should use whatever bike you plan on racing in.  what about the rear cassettes, any differences there? one rear wheel setup may be better than the other.

I have 3 rear cassettes to choose from, probably going with the 11/28, just have to make sure it fits my chain.  My bike came with a 12/25 so I think the 28 will fit.  I have tried to find video's online of Paris Mountain to get a good idea but haven't found any.  There doesn't seem to be a lot of people signed up, I wonder why.

You need to make sure your rear derailer can handle the 28.

I think part of the reason it is not so popular is it is close to other races in the Greenville area, the distance for the International is a little odd, it is hot this time of year and a lot of are preparing for other races. I'm sure there are other reasons but a lot of people will sign up at the last minute also depending on the weather

Yeah I am not sure the 28 will fit, worst case I will hoof it up the end of Paris Mountain.  I am just using this for some hill training and for 6 Gap in the fall.

I ride with an 11-24 and have no problem with the climb. My wife uses an 11-28 with no problems.   Looking forward to the race this weekend.

G-ville tri usually has well over 300 people but it looks like only 275 signed up so far. Maybe the reason for the push?
