Subject: Salt Pills

IN my first race of the year (2 1/2 weeks ago) both of my calves cramped up big time.  A lot of it was my lack of proper hydration before a race, but part of it was that it was 90 degrees outside as well.  I was told that I need to take "Salt Pills"

 SO...

I am wondering who out there takes these, what type, where to get them, price, and frequency of use while excercising??

Thanks

Benihana

my only knowledge of salt pills is from a friend of mine that took them 'back in the day.' he had overheating issues, but salt pills were the craze, so he took a few. he got so messed up that he was actually declared dead before he woke up on his own (scaring the crap out of the nurse in the room.)

but he was only racing between 5 and 10K, so probably didn't need such concentrated electrolyte replacement as much as he needed to stay cool and hydrated.

anyway, after hearing him talk about this, personally I'd talk to a sports-savvy doctor before trying salt pills. but that's just me.

Hammer Endurolytes are more popular than salt pills. I've just started to incorporate them into my training so I can't add much more. You can get more info from the Hammer website and you can buy them at all3sports.com amongst other palces.

E-caps...E-caps...Yeah...E-caps!!

I take 1-2 caps/hr during races.  Prevent cramping and are the saviour during hot races.  Most races give them out in little packages.  They are white and about the size of a really large Advil.

Everyone I know that has complained about cramping has tried them and they work like a charm.  BUT...DO NOT...I repeat...DO NOT bite into them.  Swallow them.  I almost ran off the road because I accidentally bite into one and it's something Nasty.

So I just googled "E-caps" and there are a bunch of different ones available.  Which one(s) are you taking during the race that help with preventing cramps

You can also go directly to the hammer nutrition site: http://www.e-caps.com/za/ECP?PAGE=PRODUCT&CAT=ELECT&PROD.ID=4037&OMI=10104,10082,10047&AMI=10104

I haven't purchased any online because I'm a cheap bastard and steal nicely ask my friend for their free ones out of their race packets.

I've been using Enduralytes. (Haven't tried the E-caps.) I generally try to take them if I'm going to be out sweating hard in the Texas heat for more than 90 minutes or so.

Before I figured out what was going on, I used to CRAVE french fries (!) after a race or long ride, and I would just feel "off" for a day or so, and craving salt. Now that I understand my body better, salty snacks and Enduralytes have become part of my routine... usually. I did have calf cramps at my last race though, but that may be because I skipped the usual pre-race banana... hmmm....

e-caps = endurolytes.

E-caps is their generic term for all of their suppliments.  You want to buy the endurolytes, as they are the electrolyte suppliment.

How long is your race/run?  Generally if it's not very long (less then 90 to 2 hours), then I'd say electrolyte depleation isn't going to do much to you unless you are going into the event already depleated.  I used them on my marathon and I did notice I had less discomfort during the run.  Then again, there were a few things that I was doing different on that run, so I can't tell if they were responsible.

The absolute best thing to do is get a sweat test done at a lab. This will tell you if you are a heavy salt sweater or not. 700-800 mg of salt loss per hour isn't unusual in an average sized male. For a rule of thumb, if you typically end sweaty workouts with a white film on your clothes, you'll probably neecd more. If you only occasionally have the white film, you're probably about average.

Between your energy drink, your gels or other nutrition, and your e-caps, you want to replace what you're losing. For me, now that I'm experimenting with Gatorade Endurance, I don't worry about the salt pills anymore. The Endurance formula has 200 mg of sodium per 8 oz serving and I aim for 1 liter per hour That gives me just over 800 mg of sodium right there along with 240 calories. Add a gel and another 8 ozs of water, and I'm at 85 g of carbs for 340 calories, 900 mg of sodium, and 1.25 L of liquid per hour (making my carb concentration an ideal 6.8%).

Hammer Nutrition Endurolytes work well - I have a lot of people who use them with success. We have just started offering Thermolytes by Sport Quest (I'll attach a link) - they are used by a lot of endurance athletes and have good results as well...

Hiya folks...

Just MHO, while I am only a tri-wannabie--I have enjoyed many a long distance running race.
For years I went with E-caps, which work fine--but since I have discovered SUCCEED!electrolyte/buffer caps I have never gone back.

Each cap has 341mg of sodium and 21mg of potassium as well as sodium bicarb which really helps when you are slogging your way in to the 8th hour of a race with a hot queasy stomach!!!

Highly reccomend!!

Remember to replace potassium, too, not just sodium. And maybe this is wrong, but when I hear "cramps" I usually think of potassium, not sodium. Morton's Lite Salt has potassium in it as well as sodium, so it might be a way to get more potassium into your diet. I'm sure that the other products recommended above are helpful.

Another vote for e-caps endurolytes tablets.  Been using them for a while now and have never had any problems with cramping or losing water weight from a workout if I'm taking the right amount of endurolytes.  In addition to sodium, they contain magnesium and potassium.

This company also makes a product called HEED, which is an electrolyte replacement powder along with carbs.  You can mix this with your water bottles and it gives you a consistent energy source for workouts / races of about 2 hours or less, and will also keep you from cramping.
