Member 208 Williamsburg VA | Subject: Anyone planning on an Ironman in 2013/2014? I just completed Ironman Lake Placid last Sunday and I can't wait to do another one. Anyone in the Peninsula/Williamsburg area planning an Iron in 2013 or 2014? I would love to do LP again, but the family wants to consider other destinations. I'm looking for help deciding on a race and possibly another training partner. |

I am planning on doing my first IM in 2013, likely something later in the season as I won't be able to get off work during the summer. My understanding is that you need to sign up the day the race comes available or you can forget it; LP'13 is already sold out. I'm looking at IM Panama City Beach.
I am in Middlesex; maybe an hour from you in Wmbg. |

I am in Middlesex; maybe an hour from you in Wmbg. IM Florida is on my short list too. Primarily because we can still drive and the family likes the destination. Lake Placid always sells out the day it opens. I am not sure how hard it is to get into Florida. I would expect pretty hard since it is a popular 1st Ironman. Be glad to meet up for some long rides on the weekends if you ever head down this way. |

I want to do my first one next year, my buddy and I are thinking of Louisville but Arizona, FL and Cozumel are on the radar. I am in Newport News, we do all of our training rides from Jamestown HS and swim with the Masters Swim group @ Fort Eustis. |

What type of averages are you all normally holding? Actually riding for 2 hours this weekend not sure which day yet but normally leave between 5:30 and 6 am. Most rides we average about 20 - 21 mph. We do a lot of tempo rides as well and mostly ride the Patriots half route altering it to fit the timing/distance we have planned. Also have a friend getting ready for IM FL for this riding out of Jamestown HS each weekend if your looking for longer rides now. His average paces are a bit slower. |

There are tons of great rides in the upper county on secondary roads with very low traffic and more rollers. |

Member 68 Newport News | Subject: RE: Anyone planning on an Ironman in 2013/2014? I would say most of our time is spent on the back roads off of Route 5 but have to admit it really has not been an issue. Maybe because we ride so early. The last 15 - 20 miles depending on the route is rode back on 5. Here is the route: http://connect.garmin.com/course/1085779 Edited by ajfrager 2012-08-03 9:40 AM |

Here is the route: http://connect.garmin.com/course/1085779 I may be able to get out Sunday morning, but can I convince you to try another route. Check this out: http://bikebeatonline.com/articles/local-maps-pg45.htm.The Shop Ride Map is a good ride and would be about 35 - 40 miles from JHS. There is another loop past the Little Creek loop on this map around Diascund Creek Reservoir that would make the ride 50 - 55. I certainly understand if you are training for Patriot and really want to familiarize yourself with the course, but the rides in the upper county are really much better. More hills and more interesting in general. As a local, I just don't see a reason to train on Rt 5. Unless of course, you are trying to dial in Patriot. Edited by tri'n 2012-08-03 5:07 PM |

Member 68 Newport News | Subject: RE: Anyone planning on an Ironman in 2013/2014? My training partner is training for the Patriots which is part of the reason we have been riding there. We have done part of that shop route leaving from the park by the Jamestown Ferry. If you think two hours would work and he can hold close to A pace I be up for it. |

Looks like a great race and great destination for the family (one of my priorities). I'll be interested to read the comments/race reports after it runs in a couple of weeks. Could be my goal for 2014. |

I am biased because I grew up in Canada and skied a bunch at Tremblant. It is an incredible destination for families, couples or singles. My kids had a blast. The roads were silky smooth, the lake was incredible and the volunteers were amazing! It is a 14 hour drive from Richmond, so it is a wash if you are considering Florida as far as distance goes.Haven't checked if it is full, but for a destination race it is awesome.Pete |
