Was watching the 50 free and was wondering how many breaths do they use.  Is it pretty much an anerobic race?

At about 20sec duration, it's a true sprint. Breathing costs time and in a race where hundredths of a second count, not worth any breaths, which aren't needed for that duration anyway.

watching this and the 100 free (and the 200) I noticed most racers are using this 1-2-glide kind of stroke cadence; not a steady L/R/L/R thing. Interesting technique.

But boy does the water fly on these races. Fun to watch.

If you can bilateral breathe you are NOT swimming fast enough for a race of this distance.

I think Mike's talking about what's called a galloping stroke, where there's not even time on each stroke nor distance travelled. Not all the swimmer use it, but most famously Phelps does. (Not referring to breathing pattern)

The gold medalist in the women's 50 free took two breaths.

Hooray for goggle straps on top!!!

There's also something to warn the non swimmers out there, fewer breaths on anything over 400 are definitely not better. It makes your body start compensating for using less oxygen and makes you slower. Watch the longer races, they may take a breath every single stroke except when they take an extra one.

Just wanted to warn because I was in the fewer breaths camp going back to when I was 12 until I read an article this year on the subject.

In my post above (2 posts above this one), I did not write anything that followed "...two breaths." I don't know where that other text came from. I think someone tried to quote my post and what they wrote (starting with "Three"), appeared as part of my post and not their own post. Very bizarre.

That would be me. I'm an idiot. I hit "Edit" instead of "Quote" to reply to your post (mod function)

Fixed it and here's my reply below ...

Three

Some do. She actually surges after she takes breaths, which makes up for any time lost.

Interestingly enough, she also only wears one swim cap, with the goggle straps on top, old-school.
