Subject: Track cycling pacer
watching some of the Pursuit cycling?   Interesting that they have  a pace setter for the first few laps.  I've never seen that before.    And is that bicycle electric powered?

I think you are referring to keirin. A motorized cycle called a derny (or dearney) sets a pace that's faster per lap until it peels off, leaving the cyclists to sprint to the finish.

The keirin is an extremely popular event in Japan, where it attracts a lot of betting interest. 

Watch the individual match sprint races in the coming days, and then it becomes clear why it's useful to have sprint races in which the riders are launched at high speeds by a pace bike. The match sprints are something entirely different.
