I can't get my head around this.  Seriously.  I need to see it first hand to see if they are going that fast.

But they finished a 20k race in 1:19?  12.4 miles in 80 minutes?  So they are WALKING sub 20min 5k's when I can't run my hardest and get under that?  I don't see how it's possible.

Or is my match wrong?

Oh, did anyone catch the guy bonking?  I wish I could get that video clip and put it on BT everytime someone says they bonked because they had cramps.  No they didn't.  The racewalker?  THAT was a bonk.  Just fell over, body completely failed, almost convulsing, and had to be taken away by an ambulance...

I don't know much about race walking but the way I see it, maybe it's more of a technique thing, kind of like swimming. You become a faster swimmer by improving your technique, not necessarily by becoming stronger so maybe there is a technique to race walking that makes it possible to be that fast. Just my 2 cents.

there walk is really weird looking. It is very hippy.   There is a lot of technique and a lot of lonely hours training.

chirunner134 - 2012-08-06 11:42 AM there walk is really weird looking. It is very hippy.   There is a lot of technique and a lot of lonely hours training.

Probably no more or less than marathon runners or 10k runners.  And at that pace, they could keep up with them.

They have 40k soon.  Which is almost a marathon...  At the pace they can to a 30k, they are talking about WALKING a sub 3 hour marathon.  That makes no sense.

But the sub 20min 5k blows my mind because that feels like an all out sprint for me (well, close).

But there technique looks horrible on the spine/hips and looks like serious future problems to me...  I could be wrong.  Maybe they shift the hips in an anotomically correct fashion that's EASIER on the body.

Like the baseball pitch.  The overhand pitch is TERRIBLE on the arm/shoulder.  Underhand throwing is almost as fast and much more anotomically correct and easier on the body.

I'd like to see how fast they move when they're quickly trying to finish their grocery shopping or are running late for a flight. Must be a sight...

So I just tried walking as fast as I could on my morning walk with the dog  but I didn't have a watch on. I could really feel my quads engaged more than normal and my hips were swaying. I'm sure my foot landing was way off though. Anybody want to try this with me? Tomorrow I'm going to wear my Garmin and see how slow I really am.  My dog is old and can't run at all so I'm stuck walking anyway. I might as well try something new!

Found the guy that bonked...WOW!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XwZQ6h-LfQ

Nice!  Not for him bonking but for the link...  Now when someone "says" they bonked, I can show them that and they will understand.  Had to cart the guy off in a stretcher...

There was additional footage showing how unresponsive he was and the medics.

Hmmm...I don't know if there are official definitions, but I would not call that a bonk...I would call that COLLAPSING.  Bonk typically means you ran out of energy and had to limp home slowly...big difference between a bonk and straight up collapsing.

OK.  Say that in Tri talk and/or slowtwitch and see what you get.

I don't think there are tight definitions of bonking but as far as benchmarks go - this is mine.
