Results are up for the 10K swim.  The gold and silver medal winners averaged a 1:10 min/sec per 100 meters and finished in an hour, 57 minutes, and some seconds.

I can swim that pace for 100 meters, but not much more.  I routinely finish in the top 10% of triathlon swims.

It is unbelievable how fast those elite swimmers are.  Kudos to them.  Absolutely amazing.

They were about an hour and twenty minutes faster than my 10k PR...

BUT, they were allowed to draft...which helps. :D

Still, they are fast.  But here's the thing...a lot of these 10k guys also tried for the 800/1500m pool swims...in reality, if you can hold a pace for a 1500 you can hold it for a 10k if you just work on your endurance...so it's not THAT crazy fast if you look at the pool times.

I didn't see the race or the results, but the videos they have on the USA Swimming website of the 5 and 10K are worth watching.

The interesting thing to me is that they never change their stroke cadence, then they start kicking like crazy about 1500 from the end.

I did a 5K a few months ago and got lapped by a 15 year old (loop was 1K, he had a 10 min head start) who finished in 1:06. I thought that was incredible.

I enjoyed watching most of the women's 10k race on the BBC today. In the Beijing games it was the revelation of the games for me. I thought a 2-hour swim event would be quite the snoozer, but it turned out to be gripping, and probably a lot more interesting than the pool 1500m event, thanks to the drafting, the tactics, the wacky feed zones, etc.

I'm watching the mens now and find it gripping.  I like watching how they manoeuvre the aid stations.

Glad I saw this thread. I didn't know until now that theee were OWS events in the olympics. Watched the end of men's 10k on my phone just now. Really psyched for my 5k swim tomorrow.
