Subject: First Timer / Hybrid Bike
Quick question regarding the bikes. I start training for my first tri this week and have a Giant Cypress DX Hybrid about one year old. I am very hesitant to sink $700 to over $1000 into a new bike until I found out how I will take to tri's.

For those that may have completed their first tri on something other than a road or tri bike what should I expect? What are the drawbacks for training as well as the race? Any other tips / hints would be helpful so anyone feel free to throw them out there.

Thanks!

I bought a cheap Trek 7000 hybrid to start with for the same reasons. I ended up loving the sport and decided to upgrade the Trek I have. I replaced all the components and kept the frame. I love my hybrid frame!!

I used a hybrid all last year. Drawbacks? You will be slower, and they are a PITA to rack. And an annoying guy actually said someting like "you know, a decent bike is only $1500" to me. Loser. But there's no real reason not to use it - it's got wheels, they turn. And you certianly shouldn't sink $$$ until you know you want to continue.
