I am in the market for a 2nd bike. The felt tri bike is great but I want something more conducive to group rides as well. I anticipate riding this 2nd bike a lot on the Lrt trails out west, in addition to road rides. Actually thinking of getting a 2nd wheel set and leaving heavier tires on them for my trail rides.

For those of you who ride on trails or crushed limestone like the Lrt, what is your setup? Would it be silly to take a carbon frame on the trails? I plan to spend enough so it wouldn't just be a beater bike, but also don't want to go carbon if aluminum would actually be best.

Hard to say, there are certainly many good options. I ride my carbon roadie (race bike) out there and it's fine.  I prefer the softer ride over what I get with my aluminum roadie (my commuter).   A bike style you might prefer is a cyclocross frame and whatever you get, something where you can roll a slightly wider tire would be ideal.   The LRT is so flat and well groomed, it's not as much of a concern as other types of trails, so I would lean more towards something more road appropriate.

I LOVE riding my mountain bike on the trail, too, if you have room for one more bike   You obviously don't need this style of bike for the crushed limestone perfection, but I love the sound it makes.  And you can roll on/off curbs without blinking.   Then you've got a winter bike, too!

Good point about the mountain bike on the curbs. I have a mountain bike right now that I ride on the trail, and it just feels like a tank rolling along. Its main purpose for the past 7 years has been as a Burley-puller, and now that I'm past that phase I wouldn't mind cutting it loose.

How does your road/tri bike handle the crushed limestone? I haven't road on it, worried about dirt, handling, etc.

I keep my tri bike off of the trails for that exact reason. My hope with the new road bike is that I can have a wheelset that I'm not hyper about, along with stronger tires, that can take alot of the dust, etc. I know there will still be dust on the chain and other parts, but I can work with that. My main concern is if the rocks (I feel lots of small rocks kick up when i ride) will chip the frame and pith or weaken carbon fiber more than they would hurt aluminum.

I just rode my tri bike on this for a few miles this weekend.  It wasn't awful, my tires didn't sink in or anything but it definitely wasn't as fast as a solid trail.  It was also hard to pass people since there are two sets of hard-packed trail with some loose gravel between.  I was nervous each time I crossed from one path to the other.  I don't plan on using those trails again with that bike.

I have a lower end cross bike which is great on crushed gravel. Once I get on paved trail, I try to keep up with the roadies just to keep them guessing. I have a tough time getting the bike over 17 mph, though.

I don't think it's a problem with handling, although it feels sketchy at first.   It's definitely a dust issue, though.
