Subject: Chest Exercises With a Broken Rib
I broke a rib on Sunday.  Fortunately there was not accompanying trauma to the rib cage so most exercises are a go.  Is it unsafe to continue weight training while the rib is healing?  I've had several broken ribs in the past, but there were other circumstances (much more trauma) which precluded any additional exercise.  Just curious if anyone has encountered this before and what they have done to continue strength training?  I was able to do all strength exercises with the exception of bench press and dumbbell pullovers.  Thanks for any insight.

x3 talk to your doctor!  just because you were able to do the exercises doesn't mean you weren't affecting your recovery.  depending on the location of the break ANY strenuous exercise is bad because expanding your lungs can affect your healing, as well as twisting/bending your torso.

You a bull rider or something?   I broke mine in car accident a couple years ago and had to drop all training for a month.  There was always sharp pain when I would breath heavy or sneeze.   It was broken in the back though near the spine so the location may have been a problem for me too.

This tread is a bit out of date now but I cant resist answering since I also had a broken rib last year.

So, I broke my rib in May which in turn hindered me to perform my two favourite strength exercises, namely the press and the squat. For some reason the rib did not bother me during bench or deadlifts though.

So I focused a lot on bench and DL for the next couple of months during strength practice and it actually turned out pretty good. Now DL are part of my favourites too :-)

I've worked through broken and/or ruptured this and thats... But mine was literally life and death situations. I seriously doubt that you are faced with similar situations.

You asked so here's some non-professional advice, and fairly solid advice after 50 years of living life....
