I've been training for a 1/2 IM since January. I've been fatigued since mid-May and I can't seem to shake it. It has led to poor training and poor race results. I just don't have the power and energy I had a couple months ago. I just feel so tired, especially on the bike.

I've tried taking off from training for a week and mixed in a few 4 day weekends of doing nothing. But it hasn't helped at all.

I had a physical over a week ago and everything checks out normal.

Has anyone else had a similar issues?

Need more information.....Hows your nutrition? Sleep? Those have both been my key issues the times I am fatigued.

I haven't made any major changes to nutrition, other than I started to whine from caffine. Maybe that's it. But it's been almost a full month since I felt "well." I think I rested plenty.

As for sleep... I probably have been sleeping a bit more than usual and sometimes get tired in the afternoon. But that may be a direct link to no coffee in the AM.

I just finished a 1/2 IM yesterday and I'm really bumming because of my time and place. 6:36:49 and 130/144 in my age group. I really expected better since the training I did since January. I think if I did the race a month ago, I would have done much better when I felt GREAT.

I have a OLY race on June 25th. I may do very little until then. Maybe I just need to rest more.

The trouble is... I'm guessing and the season has started.

You said you've visited the doctor.
Did you have a blood test to check your iron levels?
If you are deficient this could account for your fatigue.

I'm not sure what they are testing for - I assume the standard lab tests for physicals for men my age (32). But I will ask the doc when he calls w/ results.

Thanks again.

It could be a case of iron deficient anemia (the lab tests should rule that out.) If not you could just be over-training. Alot of times if you back way down and rest, when you start back up you will be ahead of where you were.

Just some thoughts

It's rare for a man to have iron deficiency anemia. Besides, it's the anemia part (low red blood cells), not the cause of the anemia (iron deficiency) that would actually be causing fatigue. The most common cause of fatigue in other wise healthy young people is not enough rest. Common blood work should take care of any health concerns. If it is a major issue, try knocking off training completely for a week, just keep loose with stretching and core exercises. Get enough sleep, stop drinking as much caffiene and I bet you'll bounce back better than you were before.

Yep, had a full physical a couple weeks ago. My EKG did show an arrythmia (1 degree AV block) but no corrective action needed at this point. It wasn't there a couple years ago. Also had an echocardiogram & wore a holter monitor for 24hrs to be safe... all is ok.

I think it was just a combo of overtraining & stress (physically & mentally).

I'll be sure to relax as much as I can by getting a lot of quality sleep & maybe do some pilattes this week. I'm really gonna try to do well on the Philly Tri and then I'll go into recovery for some TRIs later this summer.

Does your heart rate monitor have a " rest test"?  In the Polar brands it's called "own index" and gives some indication of recovery from training sessions.

Try getting more sleep!

I had the same problem with I trained for my 1/2 IM and never got stronger or faster.  I was always training.  I tried taking an extra rest day or so but that still didn't make a difference.

I took some time off afterward the race and slept a lot.  Now that I'm back training for IM Fl, I get at least 8-9 hours of sleep each night- I shoot for 9 hours  because that's when I feel the best.  It has made a world of difference with how I feel and how much better I train.  I've gotten so much stronger from extra sleep.  Before I was only getting 6-7 hours.  Now I go to bed much earlier and feel sooo much better.  I won't ever go back to less sleep now that I see how much of a difference it makes.

The 1st degree block shouldn't be a problem. All labs are in the normal range? Hmmmmm, I am thinking you need to go on a cruise for a week. That fixes everything. Hope you get your mojo back.
