Subject: Is it ok to ask someone to switch lanes

Is is OK to ask someone to switch lanes so that you can share a lane with a person that you came with? Depending on the time of the  day you are more than likely to be splitting lanes but very rarely 3 people in a lane.

On Friday nights I usually go with my son who is 8.5. My preference is to be able to be in the same lane or at least in a lane that is close. My son has been swimming in summer leagues for 3 seasons so he knows how to share lanes and is around 2:00 / 100scy. In season (which he is not) he swims around 5000 yards per week. So he is probably better than some of the adults.

So would you rather end up sharing a lane with a kid or being asked to share with someone else so that that I end up sharing with him.

I don't think it is an issue. I would move for you.  Hopefully most people would, but I am sure there are people who would think you interrupted their workout, but hopefully most people would be cool about it.

I'd move if you asked me. I've even offered to move so people who were together could share the same lane. As long as it doesn't interrupt a specific set, or doesn't cause me to be in a three person circle swim I've got little problem with switching lanes mid workout.

I don't see how 3+ in a lane is a problem.  Last night I was in a lane with 8 others and it was fine, if not better, than usual as you got a bit of draft and a sense of tri conditions at times.

Yep, agreed with everyone else - no problem.

If my boyfriend and I arrive when the pool is busy, people have no problem rearranging so we can share a lane and vice versa.

I would switch lanes if asked. I try to suggest it to people who are obviously working out together - I don't care where I'm swimming as long as I get the workout in. Can't hurt to ask - right?

danrayner - 2012-08-17 11:23 AM I don't see how 3+ in a lane is a problem.

If more people had that attitude it wouldn't be a problem. I swim at a gym, not a real swim facility, so most folks there have no idea about circle swimming.

You're going to run into the occasional person that has an issue, but I think most people would be understanding.  Just wait until I'm in-between sets.

you can always ask anything, may not always get the answer you want, but yeah, you can ask!

I'm in the same boat but luckily there are directions at poolside on how the lane swims work.  I started off in the "middle" lane and eventually got enough dirty looks to shift myself into the "fast" lane. Thank god I did because my stroke has improved drastically trying to keep pace with those guys!!

Yes.  People who enter together, particularly parents with kids, should be given a lane together.  While your child is a proficient swimmer......many are not and I would want my younger kids in a lane with me.

X2 on the gym. We only have 3 lanes, and i have never observed anyone circle swimming there, and i would be afraid to suggest if the need arose.

I think its ok to ask to move, especially if you are with your kid.

I'm OK with it as long as they ask politely and don't interupt me in the middle of a set.

3 to a lane would be a dream... but I don't see an issue, as pointed out earlier the odd person will not appreciate it but such is life

Same. I also wouldn't care to share with a kid who obviously knows what he's doing. I'm a slow swimmer anyway

just to play the other side for a min. (I would move most of the time) However, Don't ask if you are going to move a person into a lane with a considerably slower swimmer, or if the person is a "elite" level swimmer.  Although your son, at that age is doing well, don't ask someone who swims 1:10/min 100's and swims 2000-3000 yds in a workout to move. just my 2cents

I would think it would be fine. I have been asked to move lanes and never had been bothered with it. If two people are toghter I would even ask them if they wanted me to move. I am very lucky at the pool I swim at. Most of us have "our" lane. Some people like to circle swim while others like to split the lane. But then again there are 6 lanes in the pool and it I 5:30am. There is also a 4 lane "warm" family pool that can be used.

Interestingly, I disagree with most people here but not because I wouldn't want to.  Most swims don't last that long and I like to focus.  If everyone gets in the business of re-arranging to be polite, nothing will get done.  Wouldn't it just be more reasonable for you to wait the 5 to 15 minutes you need to get the lane arranged how you want it rather than interrupt others?

No. It's not like we're in the pool performing heart surgery.

Now would you have an issue sharing a lane with a kid assuming he has comparable pacing? In the past this is how we handled it.

I had a case where two swimmers took two lanes who were swimming in sync, guy and gal.  I mean come on! Why even do this.   I wanted to swim with my daughter, I asked the guy if he would move.  I still see them every week using two lanes.

If there are two open lanes then why not?

I guess I don't see what the big deal is if there is still room for two or less per lane than what does it matter who is in what lane? You can each take a side and swim whatever speed you like.  Once you get to 3+ then you need to match speeds to circle swim, but otherwise why move around?  Just jump in with someone and swim.
